Superhero sidekick Speedy tries to save the beautiful Prudence from the Mole Master, hoping that his superhero sponsor, Pumpkin Pete, will help him for a change instead of running away.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 6-8-Guy Martin, 13, has all the usual middle school worries-homework hassles, popularity problems, and an unrequited passion for the most beautiful girl in school. However, he also has some very unusual complications. As "Speedy," the world's fastest boy, he is part of a secret crew of apprentice superheroes. With its super sponsors from the League of Big Justice, the Sidekick Club helps defend the world against evil. Guy, unfortunately, is assigned to less-than-super Pumpkin Pete ("I have all the powers of a pumpkin!") and his sidekick duties usually involve a lot of clean-up work. But when the super villains of the Brotherhood of Rottenness take out the Big Justice headquarters-and apparently the entire League as well-it is up to the sidekicks to save the day. Comic-book and superhero traditions come in for some broad but good-natured ribbing. Adult good guys speak in exaggerated, mock-heroic tones while villains cackle maniacally and threaten mayhem at every step. The Boy and Girl Wonders bicker among themselves in typical teenage fashion and often show scant respect for the senior factions-good and evil alike. Adults may be put off by some of the adolescent humor, such as the outlaw Le Poop and his bodily stench arsenal, but, like the off-the-wall chapter titles and cartoon illustrations, it's all part of the joke. It's worth considering for readers who have outgrown Dav Pilkey's "Captain Underpants" series (Scholastic) but aren't ready for the adult absurdity of Douglas Adams's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Crown, 1989).-Elaine E. Chapter One

The First Chapter!

"Outta the way! Outta the way!" Pumpkin Pete pounded his viney hand against the Pumpkinmobile's horn. The light turned red and Pete slammed his green, mossy foot against the gas pedal. Cars screeched to a halt as we zoomed through the intersection. A man crossing the street dove to safety as we sped by.

"Outta the way!" Pete shouted out the window. "Superhero coming through!"

I looked into the side mirror and saw the man rise to his knees and shake an angry fist.

"I don't think he's hurt," I told Pete.

"Of course he's not hurt! I'm a superhero.

And superheroes don't hurt people!" The Pumpkinmobile skidded around a corner and ran over a mailbox. Letters exploded into the air. "We help people." Pete slammed his fist against the horn again. "Stupid old lady! Next time I won't swerve!" he shouted at a slow-moving woman who shuffled across the street.

Twenty minutes ago, I had been polishing the chrome on the Pumpkinmobile. "Remember, wax on, wax off," Pete chuckled, and wandered into the League of Big Justice Headquarters of Big Justice. Just as I was "waxing off" the final coat, Pete raced back out into the League of Big Justice Parking Lot of Big Parking.

"Time's running out! Wegotta go! No time to explain!" he called out urgently.

And now, here we were, racing off into some unknown danger against some unknown evil with the very fate of something unknown possibly hanging in some unknown balance.

That's why I love being a hero ... or at least a superhero sidekick. I mean, come on, we punch evil in the face and stuff. Before I became a sidekick, my biggest thrill in life was sneaking into an R-rated movie. But then one day I woke up and whammo! I had these tiny black hairs growing in my armpits. Oh, and I could also run almost 100 miles per hour. That was three whole months ago, and now those armpit hairs are like some crazy jungle and I can run more than 110 miles per hour!

Which was about how fast my superhero sponsor, Pumpkin Pete, was driving.

"Uh ... Pete? Maybe we should slow down?" Office buildings whizzed by in a blur.

"Oh! You'd like that, wouldn't you?"

"Yes."

"Well, we don't always get what we want! Do you think I want a big, fat, orange pumpkin for a head? Do you?!?" Pete yelled as he screeched the Pumpkinmobile around a corner.

"Actually ... yeah, I do."

"You're darn right, I do! Because inside this big, fat, orange pumpkin head lie all the secrets of the mysterious Ways of the Pumpkin!" Pete tapped a long viney finger against his hollow gourd-head and ran another red light. "Superhero coming through!" he shouted to the numerous skidding cars that we nearly smashed into.

"Mysterious 'Ways of the Pumpkin'?" I had never heard Pete mention them before. "What're those?"

"If I told you, there wouldn't be much mystery left, would there?"

"Maybe I should know. I am your sidekick. You're supposed to be training me and stuff."

"If a bomb's about to explode, whaddaya do?" Pete asked.

"Sacrifice myself for the greater good of pumpkindom," I sighed.

"That's all the training you need, Spotty."

"Speedy."

"Whatever."

I don't know how Pumpkin Pete got his pumpkin powers. For that matter, I don't even know what pumpkin powers are. "But when I decide to unleash them, all I gotta say is, stand back!" Pete always warned me. He has a large orange pumpkin for a head, so Halloween is a very traumatic time of the year for him.

That and Easter.

"The bunnies are coming! One day, you'll see!" Pete had ranted one day. "And when they come for you with those cute pink noses and fuzzy bunny paws, we'll see who's laughing then." He stared at me for a few seconds, then added, "It's me who'll be laughing. That's who. Just in case you couldn't figure that one out."

But Pete had no time for bunnies today. He looked at the Pumpkin Super Clock in the Pumpkin Super Dashboard. It was almost six o'clock. Pete floored the Pumpkinmobile and zoomed down the road. "Come on ... come on ... almost there ..."

"Where are we going, Pete? Is the League of Big Justice in trouble? Is the city threatened? Or the world? Is it the world?!? It's an invasion, isn't it? An invasion of really big nasty green bug things with big bug fangs and drool and stuff!"

"No time to talk. Must drive ridiculously fast."

We zipped around a final corner and screeched to a halt in a parking lot. I looked for the alien invasion armada, or at least some alien drool.

"Yes!" Pete rejoiced. "Two minutes to spare!" He pulled a piece of paper down from the Pumpkinmobile's sun visor and slapped it into my hand.

It was a receipt.

"Well?" Pete huffed. "You always brag about how fast you can run, but I don't see you moving so quick now!" He shooed me along with his long viney fingers. "They close at six!"

I climbed out of the Pumpkinmobile.

"And make sure they didn't shaft me on the starch," Pete yelled out the window of the Pumpkinmobile as I opened the door to the dry cleaners.
