Each page in this creative board book jumps out at the reader. The colors and texture of the illustrations simulate sidewalk or driveway chalk drawings (by fanciful and talented artists, no less). In the multitude of ABC books, this fine addition stands out. Children are likely to return to it again and again as they learn their letters. Also, a large piece of pink sidewalk chalk is fastened inside the book's binding with plastic. The last page holds a special surprise, which is perfect for rainy days. A black chalkboard allows preschoolers to become artists, even without a driveway or sidewalk present. The authors have a companion book entitled Sidewalk 123. 2001, HarperFestival/HarperCollins, $8.95. Ages 3 to 5. Reviewer:Jeanne K. Pettenati
