Overview

It's imagination to the rescue when Josie tumbles inside her own chalk drawing.

When Josie jumps into her sidewalk drawing to pick beautiful flowers, her sister Morgan races to get help. It's a good thing too, because Josie has a great many adventures awaiting her. And when she is chased by a huge and nasty lion, the whole neighborhood rushes to the rescue.

Armed with a box of chalk, they draw all kinds of pictures to help save Josie: a boat at the riverbank to scramble aboard, a giant eagle to pull her from a raging river and an underwater cave to hide her from a shark. Through it all, Josie's spirit is undaunted. When Morgan comes through with the final, ingenious rescue, Josie presents her with the very bouquet she went after in the first place.

With suspense, charm, and clever details for observant readers, Hutchins and Ohi chalk up another winner in The Sidewalk
Rescue
— their 16th book together.

Editorial Reviews

BC Parent - Elizabeth Shaffer
A tale of imagination and adventure... page after page of wonderfully illustrated adventure.
Resource Links - Carroll Chapman
The 16th charming offering from the award-winning duo... filled with suspense and clever detail for observant readers... excellent choice for the story-time crowd!
Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books
The gently cartoonish nature of the draftsmanship adds a touch of comedy to the Perils of Pauline (jeopardies of Jodie?) drama.
Canadian Materials - Reesa Cohen
The winning combination of the talented Hutchins and Ohi have once again collaborated to design an imaginative adventure for younger readers, one full of action fnd humour. The fresh and high-spirited story has great child appeal. The text is enlarged in several places for emphasis and is incorporated into the story and illustrations. The charming, playful artwork serves the story well. Warm, expressive watercolours are spread across the expansive double pages and simply leap off the page. Ohi's lines are lively, evoking action and expression, in a cartoon-like fashion. This fun and inviting picture book will make a great story time addition. Recommended.
Children's Literature
One day Josie draws a picture on the sidewalk with chalk. She manages to jump into the picture only to discover there is danger in the picture that she drew. She is being chased by a lion. Morgan, Josie's older sister, runs for help. Her mother draws a boat for her to be able to get away from the lion. While she is in the boat, she heads for a waterfall. The father draws an eagle to come lift Josie out of the waterfall's danger. Each time Josie gets out of one mess a family member, friend, neighbor, or even stranger has to draw another part to the picture to rescue her from another danger. The idea of jumping into a sidewalk chalk drawing should be fun, but this book makes it into a dangerous escapade that might frighten children. Adults are the ones who try to solve all of the problems. After many people have tried to get Josie out of the mess, it is her sister who draws her way to safety. 2004, Annick Press/Firefly Books, Ages 4 to 8.
