The young, naÏve wife of a multi-billionaire financial superstar, Grace Brookstein's life is the stuff of fantasy. In New York, Lenny Brookstein is the King of the Wall Street social scene, both liked and respected in the worlds of high finance and high society.

Then one day Lenny vanishes, his yacht discovered abandoned far out at sea. But Grace can't accept the terrible allegations now coming to light, and she will learn the truth . . . even if that truth destroys her.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Big bad business shenanigans turn a poor little rich girl into a turbocharged avenger in bestseller Bagshawe's absorbing, if overheated, second Sheldonesque thriller (after Sidney Sheldon's Mistress of the Game). Against her family's wishes, New York socialite Grace Knowles marries Lenny Brookstein, who's more than 30 years her senior—and one of the cofounders of Quorum, “the most profitable hedge fund of all time.” For a while, everything's utterly fabulous, until Lenny's investors lose $75 billion. When Lenny disappears after going for a solo sail off Nantucket one summer day (his body surfaces a month later), Grace winds up in prison for securities fraud, among other charges. Determined to clear her name and Lenny's, Grace pulls off a daring escape. NYPD Det. Mitch Connors sets out to catch the elusive society beauty, but in the course of his hunt provides her some unexpected help. Sheldon fans will find only tenuous links to Sheldon's own novels. (June)

Good To Know

Some interesting outtakes from our interview with Sheldon:

"When I was 17, I was happy to be working in a drugstore, because I could steal enough sleeping pills to commit suicide."

"I have bi-polar syndrome and was not aware what was disturbing me until I received an Academy Award and went to see a psychiatrist."

"I have worked 7 days a week as long as I can remember. A business manager of mine gave me $25 worth of tennis lessons. I went down to my tennis court and we played once a week. I really enjoyed it. Playing with the pro one day, my teacher said to me that the money had been spent and did I want to continue. I started to say yes, then I realized that I didn't want to be out on the tennis court. I wanted to be in my office writing. That was 25 years ago and I haven't been on my tennis court since."

    I Also Recommend:

Wow, this is a great book. So engrossing I can't put it down.

It's true that I really am enjoying this book. I am almost to the end but couldn't wait to write the review. I rely on reviews to choose my books to read so I wanted my review to be available if others are doing the same. For many years I read the other Sydney Sheldon books. They are from many years past.... so this was nostalgic for me to read. Check out his Rage of Angels which was really great. I found that Tilly Bagshawe has done a great job and I hope that many more continue to come out.

    Oh no you didn't!!

This book is great! The storyline moves at a very quick pace. I found myself trying to read faster and faster to see how it was going to end...and in the end, you will find yourself saying..."Oh no you didn't!!!" What a great weaving of storyline about money, it's evils, families and their loyalties, growing up and never giving up. Without giving away the ending, I would say Grace wins in the end. I know some might not agree, but she wins where it matters.

an entertaining over the top of the Empire State Building tale

To the shock and dismay of her family, Manhattan socialite Grace Knowles marries legendary hedge fund manager Lenny Brookstein. Her family objects to her wedding Lenny because the groom is as old her parents.

Still the couple seems happy together until Lenny's hedge fund Quorum, up until recently the top performer ever, lose $75 billion. Lenny does not appear shaken about the downturn as if nothing went wrong. However, when he goes sailing off Nantucket, he fails to come home. The police arrest Grace accusing her of securities fraud. Grace escapes leading to NYPD Detective Mitch Connors trying to find her. As she tries to prove her innocence, Lenny's body is found and Mitch helps the allegedly felonious socialite.

The second Sheldon thriller first (see Sidney Sheldon's Mistress of the Game) is an entertaining over the top of the Empire State Building tale starring a wealthy woman with only socialite skills turning into superhero. Fast-paced from the moment Lenny fails to come home, fans will enjoy After the Darkness as long as you suspend belief by leaving your credibility meter in the drawer as Grace proves to be a retaliatory superwoman.

    Get a grip people

First things frist. Sidney Sheldon is not a woman. Stop calling him she or Ms. Sheldon. Second, he died years ago. He did not write this book. This author took his old novel n rewrote them. Duh yeah, this book does sound just like If Tomorrow Comes. This book may be good but it is not Sidney Sheldon. He's no longer with us. Read Master of the Game, The Other Side of Midnight, If Tomorrow Comes and Rage of Angels. Those are the true Sidney Sheldon classics. Best book he himself ever written. They were wrtten over 2 decades ago but are the best novels ever of all time. Will only give this book 1 star for effort.

If you like Sidney Sheldon you'll love this!

Ms. Bagshawe has done a wonderful job of continuing Sidney Sheldon's stories. The writing style sounds just as if Sidney Sheldon was writing this. The story is mezmerizing. A definite page turner. The ending will surprise you.

Fast Entertaining Read but Very Flawed - Note: Possible Spoiler

One thing I can say about this book is that it is never boring. In the wake of the financial meltdown and the Bernard Maddoff scandal the author weaves a tale about Grace Brookstein, a simple minded society woman who married a financial investment magnate named Lenny Brookstein. It turns out that Lenny was actually more like Bernie Maddoff and when he mysteriously disappears and is presumed to have committed suicide, his empire crumbles leaving so many people financially wiped out.

With no one for the public to turn their wrath on, they blame "dumb" Grace and she is put on trial for the theft of some 85 billion in investor funds. Her two sisters seem to abandon her and the only one that wants to help her is Lenny's accountant, John Merrivale. Merrivale changes Grace's lawyer and she get bad advice resulting in a life sentence at a women's "maximum security" prison.

Everybody hates Grace including all the inmates and the warden. On her first day, she is almost beaten to death. Then as some of the prisoners get to know her they take a liking to her and want to help her. She gets a private investigator to look into her claims and he comes up with evidence that Lenny was more than likely murdered. Grace is determined to "escape" the "maximum security" prison that nobody has ever escaped from and to find her husband's killer.

This is definately one of the "beach" novels that you hear all about. It is full of incompetenet police and FBI agents and dumb prison guards. Grace also goes from being so "clueless" to almost Jason Bourne-like. About fifty pages in I figured out the end of the book and I kept hoping I was wrong and that the author wouldn't go there with it because it is so like a really bad movie ending. When I saw it coming I virtually let out a verbal "oh no!"

I grudgingly give it three stars for the entertainment aspect.

    Surprising End

Though I can't admit to understanding the relationship between Sidney Sheldon's relatives and author Tilly Bagshawe that prompted the penning of "After the Darkness", I can happily report that it was brilliant and unexpected. Expertly developed characters-with insatiable appetites and a lack of morality that would make a hardened criminal blush-are perfect components in this gripping tale of excess.

Brought up in the world of Manhattan's elite, Grace Brookstein had it all. A loving billionaire husband, beauty and youth all contribute to her continued naiveté. Charmed by her husband and their fairytale lifestyle, Grace never imagined there were cracks in the veil of perfection until it was much too late. When the artificial trappings of her carefully constructed world are viscously stripped away, Grace finds an inner strength of character that shocks even the most spiteful enemies.

As the criminals slither in plain sight, even the most adept reader will find it challenging to figure out "who-dun-it" as "After the Darkness" races along to its surprising end.
