Overview

Sierra Falls, California, is one of those sleepy towns that people choose to leave. Sorrow Bailey chose to stay behind and run the struggling family lodge, but has always yearned for more. Things look up when she discovers a collection of letters from her three-times great grandmother and namesake, telling the story of a forbidden love affair.

Billy Preston is the new sheriff, a widower escaping the grief of his former life. He helps out after an accident at the Bailey lodge, and what begins as admiration for Sorrow's quiet strength quickly becomes more. When Sorrow's discovery brings fame to Sierra Falls and her dreams of a better life are within reach, one too many "accidents" have Billy wondering whether someone is willing to kill to keep them off the map...

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Moving from historical romance (Master of the Highlands, etc.) to contemporary romance set in the titular California foothills village, Wolff pairs a saddened older man and a sweet put-upon young woman. Sorrow Bailey, stuck running her parents’ rundown lodge and tavern, yearns to be a real chef somewhere—anywhere—else. She’s tired of her boyfriend, Damien, who runs his family’s timber business, and now wants recently widowed sheriff Billy Preston, formerly a big-city police lieutenant. While Sorrow and Billy’s mutual attraction smolders and soon flares into lusty bedroom acrobatics, a steadily worsening series of disasters hits Sorrow and her family business, paralleled by a senior-citizen romance between fry cook Tom Sullivan and divorcée Marlene Jessup. Engaging protagonists, sympathetic minor characters, and an involved though predictable plot full of real-life problems create enjoyable escapism while leaving broad hints at episodes to come. Not bad. Enough mystery to hold my interest. Couldn't warm upnto the heroine's sister though. Not sure I'll read her story. This story is worth checking out though.

This is a tough book to review because the story was good and the characters were also good. BUT, it moved oh so slow... It wasn't badly written but it read like molasses (to me)...It took me four days to read it and that is unthinkable since two days is a long time for me... I could put this one down easily and not feel as if I were missing anything... Ho hum!!! Going to check out Book II, Timber Creek, but at this point can't generate any interest in buying it... Specifically nothing of note happened until you were more than half way through the book.... Just OK...
