Gr 3-4-Taro, a lazy young man who lives with his widowed mother in a dilapidated house, devises a plan so that he can marry well and never have to work. He disguises himself as a god and commands a rich merchant to give him his daughter's hand and, when the man calls on Taro's mother to make the arrangements, the woman introduces a few contingencies of her own. Soon, the roof of her house is fixed, the walls are patched, and Taro is ensured a job in the rich man's storehouse. Although annoyed at first that he must work for his new father-in-law, his story ends blissfully, as he has a loving wife, becomes content in his labor, and is no longer called "Siesta-de-tres-anos." Set in Japan, this story was originally written in English, and is just as effective in the Spanish translation. Say's expert watercolors perfectly complement the understated humor.-Donna J.
