Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Justina Engebretson
There is a saying that silence is golden, but for the one who has never been able to hear or utter sound, this statement could not be any more false. Thanks to Thomas H. Gallaudet the silent world in which many individuals were once forced to live is no more. A part of the "Genius At Work! Great Inventor Biographies," this chapter book presents the story of Thomas H. Gallaudet who gave voice to those who are hearing impaired. There is a brief account of Thomas' early life, from birth to college. The book also tells of the young girl Alice who first inspired Thomas to develop a language for those who could not hear. Thomas faced struggles along the way, but the contents of this book clearly show the legacy that he left behind. This book is an excellent resource to teach children about the history of Sign Language. Some of the accompanying pictures serve to demonstrate various signs for different words or phrases. A full list of the alphabet with its accompanying signs is provided. The timeline at the back of the book will help students follow the sequence of events in Thomas' life. There is also a list of less familiar words and their accompanying definitions included. Though this book is an excellent resource, it would be beneficial to read additional material on the subject and a short list of books is given, along with some websites to learn more about Thomas and Sign Language. Overall, this is a highly recommended educational resource. Reviewer: Justina Engebretson
