Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Wendy M. Smith-D'Arezzo
Following a two page introduction that outlines a brief background on American Sign Language (ASL), provides instructions for how to interpret the illustrations in the book, and explains the use of finger spelling, the rest of the book includes numerous signs, grouped in a logical manner. Sign groupings include family, home, food, and animals, among others. Each two page spread shows a child participating in an activity, surrounded by eight smaller pictures showing the sign along with a brief written explanation of how to execute it. There is an index in the back, allowing a child to quickly look up a particular word. In addition, there is a tear out poster with the ASL finger alphabet. The illustrations are cartoon-like in nature, with everyone sporting large round heads, big smiles, and small wide-set eyes. Boys and girls are equally represented, as are a variety of skin colors and hair types. This would be a delightful addition to any home or classroom library. Reviewer: Wendy M. Smith-D'Arezzo
