Overview

On a Danish shore, a Vatican priest is found—hanging on a cross. The next day, the same crime is repeated…this time in Asia and Africa. Meanwhile, deep in the legendary catacombs near Orvieto, Italy, an archeologist unearths a scroll dating back two thousand years, revealing secrets that could rock the foundations of Christianity. Its discovery makes him the most wanted criminal in all of Europe. But his most dangerous enemies operate outside the law of man...

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Kuzneski elbows his way into the overcrowded field of the papal thriller with his sophomore effort (after 2002's racially charged The Plantation), combining the requisite plot twists and Da Vinci-esque secret histories with a Passion of the Christ-like attention to gore. And there's plenty of opportunity for gore: Kuzneski kicks off the action with a nasty crucifixion in modern-day Denmark. It turns out the victim is a Vatican priest, and his murder is just the first. Meanwhile, maverick archeologist Dr. Charles Boyd and his assistant Maria Pelati discover a 2000-year-old scroll underneath the Italian town of Orvieto that contains "a secret that would change... the history of the world forever." Instantly, the two become the most wanted people in Europe, pursued by the Vatican, a large measure of Western European law enforcement and two freelance CIA agents. As the chase begins, more crucified priests are turning up across the globe, and the head of Interpol's new homicide division, Nick Dial, finds himself edging closer to the heart of a centuries-old coverup. Cat and mouse games accelerate and alliances shuffle as the overstuffed plot brings its numerous players together, but excessive detail and exposition-heavy dialogue slow the action. Despite its flaws, Kuzneski knows what fans of the genre want: compelling and well-researched history, high-tech 21st-century sleuthing and a lot of action. (Oct.) Great book. Really enjoyable read. I thought the everything was well done but my only qualm is that I felt the ending (last page specifically) was kind of lame. Other than that, read it! it is exciting!

    OUTSTANDING!!

I loved this book!! The action started on page one and took me on a breathless ride all the way to the end. If you like DaVinci Code type stories, you will like this. I will definately be adding Chris Kuzneski to my favorite authors list and be reading more of his books!

Excellent book! I'll be looking for more of his

So many twists and turns in this! It definitely kept my interest throughout the entire story. The way the story was going, I had no idea how he could do an ending to it that would work, but he did! If you like the history conspiracy type of books, you'll really like this one.

    Jighly Recommended

If you never read another book you will want to read this one. Chris has out done himself this time. After reading the book you will stop and really think about what you just read. It is non-stop action from the first page to the last page.

    I Also Recommend:

    Great Author, Great Book

By far, Chris Kuzneski is one of the greatest authors i have ever read. I´ve only finished two of his books and I´m already craving for more.
"Sign of the Cross" gives the reader basically the whole package: action by bunches, diverse and unique locations, enjoyable bits of humor, historical facts ( but not as many as to bore the reader), and plot twist that will make you want to finish the chapter just to read the next one. All this, plus the addition of small-to-standard sized chapter, makes "Sign of the Cross" a good, entertaining, hard-to-put-down book.

I highly recommend this, and the rest of Kuzneski's works.

    I Also Recommend:

    Pittsburgh Steeler 'country' appeal!

I've read a lot of authors and Chris Kuzneski is right up there with the best. As I was born and raised in Pittsburgh I find it very entertaining that the characters Jonathan Payne and David Jones are Pittsburgh natives. Anyone who likes a good mystery and has ever lived in Pittsburgh will enjoy these books!

Now, here is a good book

There has been a rush in the book business to write the next Da Vinci Code. I have read a number, and most have been awful. Now, here is one that is an enjoyable read, has well defined characters, and does NOT insult the intelligence of the reader. The premise is supported by detail that makes it believable to the willig reader. It is developed well enough to discuss with others and to recommend. I was very, very pleasently surprised. The nature of the secrets in the scrolls would definatelt challenge modern religious thinking. I would recommend this book very strongly. COngradulations to this author and I will look for his next effort.

    Very good read

I thought that 'The DaVinci Code' was controversial, wait till you read 'Sign of the Cross'. The message should get more people talking about early Christianity which is a good thing.

Thirty miles north of Copenhagen in Helsingor, Denmark, Father Erik Jansen is crucified on a cross with a sign nailed to the top: ¿IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER¿. By the time touring students find the deceased, his corpse is rotted gray and birds are dining on his flesh. The next day, identical homicides occur in other parts of the world. --- At the same time of the crucifixion murders, archeologist Dr. Charles Boyd leads a dig at the Middle Ages ¿Vacation Vatican haven underneath Orvieto, Italy. There he believes he will find a depository of scrolls that is if he and his crew can locate the Catacombs that most of his peers classify on a par with the Loch Ness monster. Boyd proves right as he and his assistant Maria Pelati make a discovery that would destroy Christianity. Now they are targets of several diverse groups, one of which is killing priests already and another is sanctioned by the Vatican. Their only hope to stay alive long enough to show their finding from first century Rome to the world reside in the penitentiary in Pamplona, Spain where former MANIACS Jonathan Payne and David Jones linger waiting for ¿official¿ intervention. --- Loosely echoing the Brown phenomena, SIGN OF THE CROSS is an action-packed Christian conspiracy thriller that goes full speed from the onset (with the murder of Father Erik) and never slows down until the final explanation of the finding. The fast-paced story line grips the audience as the plausibility of the discovery seems reasonable so that the too many cat and mouse encounters that follow appear possible. Though the cast in some ways come out of Brownian 101 casting, readers will appreciate Chris Kuzneski strong thriller that refreshes the Christian conspiracy sub-genre. --- Harriet Klausner

Intrigue and Excitement Burst thru the Colors of the Fall

Are you ready to exercise those little gray brain cells? Chris Kuzneski and his publisher Jove Books will be releasing his new book this fall. In the wake of Dan Brown¿s 'Da Vinci Code' comes 'Sign of the Cross', an international thriller that will leave you breathless with the movements of the plot that rival a NASCAR race. The twists and turns in this one will keep you guessing until the end, leaving you wanting more from this writer. I give this writer 6 out of 5 stars as he kept me on the edge of my seat during the reading. There are interesting facts that may or may not bring out the best/worst from the religious side of the house. But then, like 'Da Vinci Code', 'The Templar Legacy' by Steve Berry, and 'The Grail Conspiracies' by Michael McGaulley, 'Sign of the Cross' deals with subject matter that people love to classify as NEW AGE, new age that has been around for two millennium questioning what we were taught in Sunday school and church. In sticking with my NASCAR comparison I will attach this old adage to my review of this great read - as a warning. When you buy the book this fall shut up, sit down buckle up and prepare for heart stopping reading.
