    Rising Fire (please comment)

    RISING FIRE
    by Raven

    CHAPTER SEVENTEEN-

Angharad flew overhead as we slowly traveled through the narrow strip of woods. The forest was quiet, almost too quiet. The only sound I could hear was the faint whisper of the wind in the pine trees, and the quiet flapping of Angharad's wings.
I glanced up at the Elf Owl, who had paused a little ways away to rest on a rock. I padded over to her, wondering if she was okay. There was a strange look in her yellow eyes, that I couldn't quite grasp...
    Suddenly, I recognized it.
    Fear.
Angharad seemed to shrink before my eyes, her rusty brown feathers flattening against her back.
The cloudy gray fur along my spine began to prickle. "What is it?" I whispered.
    "A w-wolf," Angharad stammered.
I unsheathed my claws, my fur bristling.
"No!" Angharad hissed. "I'll distract him. You run for the border. The Moon Clearing isn't far."
"But—" I began, but she cut me off.
"I'll be fine. Just go!" The Elf Owl ordered.
I turned and ran, straight into the jaws of the waiting wolf. It snapped at me, drool flying from it's jaws. It's green eyes blazed with fury, and it growled maliciously.
Huge, with shaggy dark gray fur, and super long fangs.
    Time to run.
I dodged the snapping jaws, and fled. I could feel hot breath on my paws, and could hear the teeth snapping on empty air as the wolf tried to bite my flying tail. With a yowl of terror, I dashed faster, my paws skimming over the ground.
Suddenly, the wolf let out a loud yip of pain. I glanced over my shoulder, and saw that Angharad had swooped down to attack the wolf with her talons.
"Run!" The Elf Owl shrieked, swiping at the wolf again.
I turned around, and ran. Undergrowth brushed past me as I ran right through it. Brambles tore at my light gray pelt, but I didn't care. There might be more wolves out there... terrifying, vicious wolves that were hungry for cat.
    Or owl.
I wondered if Angharad was okay. I had never before thought of making friends with another species. Lone Cats didn't need the company of other animals. They were free, and wild.
But I missed all of the others—Rue's gentle comfort, her kits and their wild games, Lunara's quiet encouragement, Arrow's friendliness and cheer, searching for prey in the farmiliar woods with Hunter at my side, and curling up next to Hawk after a long day.
I felt a pang of sadness as I remembered the tabby tom.
    I miss him alot.
I had slowed down, and was panting. My lungs felt like they were about to burst. I can't remember ever begore running that fast in my life.
But then I noticed that the pine trees were thinning, to be replaced by oak and beech trees. The undergrowth was growing thicker, and I smiled.
    I had reached the Edge.
That ment the Moon Clearing wasn't far.
I sniffed the air, and caught an unfarmiliar scent. It didn't belong to any animal I had heard of.
But then I picked up another scent. A rather farmiliar, and rather dark smell.
    I bristled, unsheathing my claws.
A faint hiss reached my ears.
Out of the bushes slithered a jade green snake, with glittering black eyes.
But then, to my suprise, it spoke in a friendly voice.
"You're one of the Chosen, aren't you?"
