Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger
This volume is a part of the "We the People" biography series. John Hancock was an important figure in the earliest days of the United States of America. This text provides a compelling picture of his life that will engage the interest of young readers. John Hancock was born in Massachusetts and named after his father and grandfather. As a young boy, he played with his friends and went to church, but his life changed forever when he was seven and his father died. He lived with his grandfather for a while and eventually went to live with his Uncle Thomas and Aunt Lydia. John enjoyed a comfortable life with these wealthy relatives, having fine clothing, a beautiful house, and an excellent education. John eventually went to work for his uncle's business, which is where he was first troubled by British actions. Sharing details about his youth will get younger readers hooked and excited about the more familiar story that follows. The book also includes a timeline, short paragraphs about important figures in Hancock's life, resources for further reading, and an index. Reviewer: Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger

Accurate and readable, with lots of color illustrations, these biographies are beautifully laid out and packed with information. They will be a boon for report writers and browsers alike, as they balance the historic and the personal well. Unfortunately, the maps are rather poor, with disproportionate typography and some sites missing. Back matter includes a page of "Did You Know?" facts, mini-biographies of other people mentioned in the book, and short lists of places to visit (parks, museums, birthplaces). Note: The subtitles, which are the subjects' names, do not appear on the spines.
