Overview

Sihpromatum (Sip-row-may-tum) is a memoir series of one family’s incredible four-year, 80 country backpacking adventure. The first installment, I Grew My Boobs in China, takes the reader through China and Mongolia.
In 2005, 14-year-old Savannah Grace's perfect world is shattered when her mother unexpectedly announces that she, her mother (45), brother (25) and sister (17) would soon embark on a trip around the world.
This is a tale of feminine maturation – of Savannah’s metamorphosis from ingénue to woman-of-the-world. Nibbling roasted duck tongues in China and being stranded in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert are just two experiences that contribute to Savannah’s exploration of new cultures and to the process of adapting to the world around her.

I don't travel so much myself but I love to read books about other's travels/moving abroad etc. You get to experience everything without all the hassles! This book is different to many of the travel memoirs I have read previously. It is Savannah Grace's story of how her mum had split up with her dad and then she decided she had to take the family on a once-in-a-lifetime trip backpacking for a year. It actually turned out to be four years and this book details the first leg of that trip. Savannah was only fourteen when the idea for the trip was sprung on her. And she didn't like it. Not one bit. All possessions had to be brutally narrowed down to only vital things and everything else got rid of. Devastating for Savannah, pets had to be left behind/new homes found. The title is intriguing-Sihpromatum means 'a blessing in disguise' and this is what this trip eventually turns out to be, despite that initial reluctance to go on it. It turned out to be such a life-changing experience for Savannah and hey-she 's now an author because of it! The subtitle-I Grew My Boobs In China-well that's ingenious-it gets your attention straightaway, a very good move naming the book in this way. The book has a nice, easy to read style right from the beginning with a fantastic first chapter. It is not just a travel book, there's such deep emotion in here, the animal stuff really got to me. It's one of those memorable books that you think about long after reading. Really interesting and surprising is just how many inoculations they all had to have before embarking on their journey and how much they cost. Forty hour first leg of the trip! Crikey! Savannah begins to experience different foods and starts to admit that she is actually appreciating some of the things they are doing. It is a captivating book. There is a very interesting chapter where they visit a school, Savannah wears a brace or retainer and there is quite a bit of orthodontic stuff mentioned: my sister is a dental nurse so that was of interest to me and provoked a few questions to my sis. The book isn't all the trip-it starts well before that and does detail some of the circumstances leading up to it and her mum's need for the trip. Some unbelievable and unexpected events, very moving. Some of the foods and snacks-oh yuk! but the family embraced all this and tried everything. This is powerful writing and proves very engaging. Lots of photos of the trip can be viewed on Savannah's Sihpromatum website/Facebook page. What an amazing book, can't wait for the second one. A fantastic achievement.
