This is the Canadian edition of a book originally published in the U.K., and subsequently adapted slightly for the American market by Chrysalis Books. Other titles in Whitecap's "World Religions" series include Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam. The series explores the major religions of the world today. Opening with the experience of a 23-year-old dentistry student named Harmeet Kaur, this title goes on to examine facts about the religion and its practice. Chapters cover beliefs, origins of the faith, observances, and response to the challenges of today. An entire chapter is devoted to examining opinions regarding contemporary issues such as volunteerism, the role of women, birth control, abortion, genetic engineering, and drugs. Sidebars present talking points for and against different positions on subjects that provoke debate or controversy. The level of detail in this book is commendable, and the discussion of the religion goes beyond the superficial--much more so than in comparable texts currently published by American publishers.
