Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
Most all contributors to these collections are professors of English literature in U.S. and British universities. Serious students of literature at the high school level will get some idea of how literature is studied and discussed by reading these books in the Greenhaven Literary Companion series. Most of these works of literature are in fact assigned at the high school level and students are expected to read, discuss, and understand them. The Taming of the Shrew, of course, invites discussion of marriage and feminism. Silas Mariner holds such themes as redemption and morality. A Portrait of the Artist... demands attention to Joyce's literary technique and style. Gulliver's Travels discusses satire and parody. A Christmas Carol is considered as allegory, with religious themes. These are the kinds of essays (about 15-20) in each volume. Teachers certainly will use these to prepare for class discussion and assignments. KLIATT Codes: SA—Recommended for senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. 2000, Greenhaven, 186p, 99-055867, bibliog, index, 23cm, $14.96. Ages 16 to adult. Reviewer: Claire Rosser; January 2001 (Vol. 35 No. 1)
