Silencing Political Dissent: How Post-September 11 Anti-Terrorism Measures Threaten Our Civil Libertiesby Nancy Chang

In her groundbreaking new book, Silencing Political Dissent, constitutional expert Nancy Chang examines how the Bush administration's fight against terrorism is resulting in a disturbing erosion of First Amendment rights and increase of executive power.
Chang's compelling analysis begins with a historical review of political repression and intolerance of dissent in America. From the Sedition Act of 1798, through the Smith Act of the 1940s and the internment of Japanese Americans in World War II, to the FBI's infamous COINTELPRO program of the 1960s, Chang recalls how during times of crisis and war, the U.S. government has unjustly detained individuals, invaded personal privacy, and hampered the free speech of Americans.
Chang's expertise as a senior constitutional attorney shines through in the power and clarity of her argument. Meticulously researched and footnoted, Chang's book forces us to challenge the government when it is unpopular to do so, and to consider that perhaps "our future safety lies in the expansion, rather the contraction, of the democratic values set forth in the Constitution."

A great book for students, activists, teachers and just about everybody. Very well informed and well written. You cannot read this and not be scared and angry at the past injustices and the ones coming just around the corner. Places the USA PATRIOT ACT within its historical context of the ever tightening noose of political repression from the Palmer Raids, the round-ups of Japanese Americans during WW2, Cointelpro of the 1960's, etc,. If you value your voice and your conscience you must read this book.
The author writes in a straightforward way and offers clear insight into the dismantling of our Constitutional Rights. Thanks to the author's keen perception and understanding, she is able to take you through the most controversial changes in the new post 9-11 legislation, and allow you to see how easily the Patriot Act *could be abused* to turn rightful protest to fit the crime of 'terrorism'. The book investigates how these new laws give our new 'militarized' government unprecedented new powers never intended by our founding fathers, and how the current Bush/Ashcroft administration is bunkering itself behind a cloak of secrecy in which information is becoming increasingly more and more difficult to obtain by the public, and even by Congress itself. Read our Constitution and Bill of Rights. Then read this book. It will make your hair stand on end. This book is a must for everyone who loves America and wants to defend the ideals, principles and laws on which this country was founded.
This is a MUST read for all those that want to dissent and fight the system in this day in age. We must know how we have been stripped of our freedom to dissent in this country. This knowledge as activists would greatly encourage and streangthen our cause. The book gives a very clear cut explantion of what the United States Government done to limit our Rights to question our government or even unite and assemble against the government. Those that are blindly patriotic to our country would really like this book as well, its gives them the reasurence they need to know that those "crazy anarchists" protesting in the streets wont get far in their message. However, those "crazy anarchists," so to speak, are getting their voices heard, and it will be a matter of time when the rest of America wakes up and fights for what is right and not for the intrests of the top 5% of this population. Well thats it for this one. PEOPLE UNITE!
The right to dissent curtailed? I have seen no evidence of this Of course the abuse and ridicule heaed on anyone who admits to being a Christian, a conservative, or still proud of America has silenced many if those voices through fear of being tagged by one of the hateful labels thar libersls are so fond of using against anyone who dares to disagree eith them.
