Overview

HAS EARTH MADE THEIR OWN FIRST CONTACT? A YOUNG STARBRIDGE INTERRELATOR WILL UNCOVER THE TRUTH AND DETERMINE THE FATE OF AN ENTIRE PLANET.
After discovering mankind is not alone in the universe, colonizing expeditions are required to search for intelligent life before developing new planets. If the birds of Trinity are intelligent, Earth could obtain membership in the Cooperative League of Systems. If not, it could mean millions to the Jamestown Founders. But exactly how do you prove intelligence?

Deaf since birth, Tesa is the perfect ambassador to the Grus, whose sonic cries can shatter human ears. If she can earn their trust, she might even be able to save them from the privateers who are profiting from the sale of the Gru's hides. If she fails, it could mean the destruction of an entire species.

Meet the Author

A.C. Crispin is the author of the bestselling Star Wars novels The Paradise Snare, The Hutt Gambit, and Rebel Dawn. She's also written four top-selling Star Trek novels: Yesterday's Son, Time for Yesterday, The Eyes of the Beholders, and Sarek.

Ms. Crispin's most famous genre work was writing the 1984 novelization of the television miniseries V. She went on to collaborate on two more books in the V series, East Coast Crisis with Howard Weinstein, and Death Tide with Deborah A. Marshall.

Crispin and noted fantasy author Andre Norton wrote two Witch World novels together. Both Gryphon's Eyrie and Songsmith are still in print from Tor Books. Andre Norton's recent passing has brought increasing demand for her works. Ann Crispin and Andre Norton were friends for nearly 30 years.

Ms. Crispin has not confined herself to writing media-related fiction. Half her work is in her own original universes. Her major science fiction undertaking was the StarBridge series for Berkley/Putnam. These books, written solo or in collaboration with gifted new talents, centered around a school for young diplomats, translators and explorers, both alien and human, located on an asteroid far from Earth.

KATHLEEN O'MALLEY
Kathleen O'Malley has collaborated with A.C. Crispin on two of the seven Starbridge books: Silent Dances and Silent Songs and has also worked on Serpent's Gift. She spent spent most of her career working with animals including: working on an Arabian horse farm, breeding and showing Doberman pinschers and greyhounds, working in professional dog show kennels, and gradually moved into humane work and animal rescue. But the job she credits as having the greatest impact on her life was working with wildlife at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. She worked there for more than twenty years with a variety of endangered species including bald eagles, Andean condors, masked bobwhite quail, and four species of cranes. That included the endangered whooping crane and even more endangered Mississippi sandhill crane.
In addition to the works released by Ridan, Kathleen has also written a Star Trek Next Generation book (Possession) and worked with A.C. Crispin on the novelization of Alien Resurrection based on the script by Josh Whedon. She also has contributed stories in three anthologies: Tales of Zorro, The Ultimate Werewolf, and Werewolves and Shapeshifters: Encounters with the Beast Within.

    A. C. Crispin and Kathleen O'Malley start this novel in a way that shows how dangerous first contact can be, and the peril of planetary living underlines the political intrigues in the plot. If Earth can prove successful first contact with a new species, that will secure the planet's full membership in an interstellar league. Unfortunately for the Terrans, another race wants that membership slot and is trying to undermine their efforts. So are privateers who want to exploit the planet's resources and sell the beautiful, feathered hides of the avian inhabitants. While the story focuses on bridging inter-species and cultural divides, it also has action and intrigue.

At issue is the nature of the planet's main avian species, a crane-like race called the Grus. If they're intelligent, interaction with them can qualify as first contact and secure the league membership for Earth as well as guaranteeing the protection of the planet. If they aren't, then all bets are off, and everything is ripe for exploitation.

Tesa, the young heroine of Silent Dances, becomes the "interrelator" for the first contact effort. Deaf from birth, she's in no danger from the Grus' potentially lethal cries. She also knows sign language, which enables her to learn the Grus' equivalent more readily than someone with no such experience. She moves into the nest of the Grus' leader and his mate and helps foster their new hatchling. But not everyone in the flock likes this idea. The Grus' leader faces opposition and an attempted coup from within his flock. There's also another avian race who are the Grus' mortal enemies.

This is a thoughtful examination of the issues involved in first contact. It also encourages the reader to consider what "normal" really means. I missed the Starbridge series when it was originally published, but I loved Silent Dances and am delighted to have the series available again. I can't wait to read the rest of it!
