    Bringing the Silents to Life

Before getting hold of this book, I'd only heard about such entertaining figures as Will Rogers, Stan Laurel, Buster Keaton, and Harold Lloyd. Maybe I'd seen snippets of their silent work, but I didn't really know anything about them. Now I do! Author Lon Davis has brought them all to life for me. How interesting to know that the Little Rascals were a lot easier to direct and more natural in the silent films than they were in the talkies! Did you know they didn't use a script in the silent versions of those young folks' adventures? And what terrific photos are included with each mini-bio! This is a must-read for anyone who is nostalgic for the silent-screen era.

Lon Davis' " Silent Lives " is an excellent introductory volume, covering (albeit briefly) 100 figures crucial to the silent film era.
    There
are several glaring omissions in this particular
volume, but overall the book does a fine job of introducing novice film students to these wonderful performers. For example, I am stunned that the amazing Renee Adoree' is not included in this book, along with
several others, are not among the 100 chosen, but this is the hazard of any book like this. Excellent for the novice learner, not exactly the ticket for the more knowledgeable silent enthusiast.
