Overview

Though the Chieftains are an integral part of this release, SILENT NIGHT is definitely leader Paddy Moloney's Christmas album. And as producer, Moloney continues the globe-trotting ways that have enlivened the last Chieftains releases and led to his founding a world-music label. Here, he teams up with the Vatican Orchestra, the Bulgarian Voices Angelite, and Italy's Zucchero, as well as the Harlem Gospel Choir. Whereas the Chieftains' wonderful BELLS OF DUBLIN holiday record sounds like an intimate gathering of (very talented) friends, these Christmas songs are seriously spiritual music. Occasionally the folksy Chieftains are fairly dwarfed by vast choirs, grand orchestras, and operatic singing (diva Montserrat Caballe is one of Paddy's invitees). But the overall result is that SILENT NIGHT is less of a Christmas album and more like a religious experience.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Silent Night: A Christmas In Rome unites Paddy Moloney and the Chieftains with Maire Brennan, Montserrat Caballe, Carlos Nunez, Sissel, Zucchero, the Harlem Gospel Choir, the Vatican Choir, Voices of Bulgaria Angelite and the Glenstall Abbey Monks. Needless to say, this album is an epic holiday celebration, and tracks like "Silent Night" "Journey To Bethlehem," "Gloria" and "The Sheperds" combine Christmas spirit with Celtic and choral splendor.
