Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Joyce Rice
Christmas is a special time of year whether you are a religious person, someone celebrating winter or someone who just enjoys the "spirit" of the holiday. The red and green decorations and the reindeers with their red noses often disguise the simpler pleasures of the holiday. Nothing will slow us down during this often chaotic, too-much-to-do time than the music of the carols associated with this season. We dance with Fred Astaire, sing along with Bing Crosby but when the music of "Silent Night, Holy Night" and "O Little Town of Bethlehem" is heard even over the loud speaker in the mall, it causes us to pause and become introspective. In this small volume, the editor has given the reader a glimpse of the history behind this carol and its simple beginnings. The Dickens' style illustrations contribute to the old world feel of the words. The publisher has cleverly included a 24 tab Advent calendar on the front cover, which makes this a great gift book to share with young readers. The size of the book is a reminder of the golden books of our childhood. The simple story and song, the rich illustrations and the experience of an advent calendar are a lot to get into a small book such as this but the publisher has done an admirable job. Public library dollars spent on this volume must take into consideration the short life of this book, even though it is a hardcover. The tabbed front cover will shorten the life of this purchase.
