Editorial Reviews

The Washington Post
For most children and many grownups, this will be a first visual encounter with "Silent Night," and it offers thoughtful insight on the meaning behind the music. Parents who need to brush up on the melody and lesser-known verses will appreciate a musical score on the final page. The peaceful refrains are also a melodic treat for bedtime, soothing as a gentle lullaby. — Jessica Bruder
Publishers Weekly
Also reissued, Susan Jeffers's 1984 Silent Night pairs the words of the classic carol with paintings of the Nativity. Her transcendent, large-scale compositions do indeed suggest a night when all is calm, all is bright. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
The first verse of the familiar and beloved Christmas carol is accompanied by Jeffers interpretation of the birth of Jesus. Smiling angels and sweetly sleeping sheep and donkeys keep the infant company in a clean, stone stable. Angels appear in the sky to the shepherds, and the magi arrive bringing gifts to the Child. Each double-paged spread is bordered in a thin gold line and wider cobalt blue until the presentation of Jesus. At that point, the border colors reverse. The sweet and serene illustrations are in a range of blues and earth tones. They depict the countryside and the wonder and joy of this event. The last page contains the music and the words for three verses. Originally published in 1984. 2003 (orig. 1984), Dutton Children's Books, Ages 3 to 8.

Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
A favorite Christmas hymn is interpreted with a more contemporary twist by the "painter of light," Thomas Kinkade. In a brief introduction, he tells of his fondness for Christmas Eve as a time of "stillness" and the presence of God. Two stanzas of the hymn are accompanied by his sentimental, full page scenes of a village in winter. It's all nostalgia in his rendition of a turn of the century Christmas that could be European or American. Perfect for reading to the kids instead of the usual ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.
