The first book in what is going to be a really good trilogy. As soon as I started reading I was already excited for the second installment. Mary Jo Putney really is able to keep her stories fresh and characters interesting. Some books are great for discussions and book clubs and some, like these, are just great to read and enjoy for the simple pleasure of reading.

A mysterious, handsome, powerful hero with a deep, dark secret never fails to win me over. But Peregrine is all that and more. He is intelligent, interesting, wickedly outrageous, and has true respect for women. He is well deserving of Lady Sara, who is sensitive, warm, and wonderful, and easily rises up to the challenge. As I devoured the original, witty dialogues, tingled at the romance scenes, and spent long hours well into the night, I sadly realized that there were only a few pages left to the end... So, I just had to read it again! Mary Jo Putney weaves a beautiful plot of two equally strong characters that are undoubtedly a perfect fit. Can't wait to read another Mary Jo Putney novel.

As romance readers, we revel in formula. We need the impossibly handsome hero, the impossibly beautiful heroine and the impossibly evil nemesis who attempts to thwart true love at every turn. Silk and Shadows lives up to the formula - maybe a little too well to let us truly believe - and throws in a few good twists to keep us guessing along the way. Though Ms. Putney seems intent on spelling out every possible contingency through the characters' thought processes, leaving the reader little or nothing to guess at, it is still a gripping read. The characters are well drawn and interesting, and the plot line has elements that keep the old 'destroy my enemy/win the woman' scenario fresh. My one complaint will, I think, be remedied in time - that Ms. Putney tends to tie things up too quickly and neatly. A fist fight is over nearly before it had begun, merely stating that it took several minutes and lots of furniture was overturned. All the truly interesting and complicated events are dismissed with a quick 'and then this happened' leaving the reader craving the rich description and riveting adventure of Nora Roberts or the earlier Janye Ann Krentz.
