Overview

Just outside of a small Texas town on a lazy hot day in 1919, sixteen year old Rachel Brock was found in the sea canes by the railroad tracks brutally murdered. A black man, Samuel Ford, was accused of the crime and was illegally hung.

Seventeen years later Texas Special Agent Cal McKleen returns home to face the crime that not only tore a town apart but his family.

His judgement comes into question when his partner, Jim Connors, learns that Cal and his cousin Jack have three things in common; a very lucrative family owned and operated mercantile; Katie, Jack's kind and caring wife, who had been Cal's true love that he abandonded years earlier; and a deadly secret they all share that is sure to destroy them.

Can the combination of the three be the reason two innocent people died that hot August day? If so, will Cal be able to find the truth before there is another causality of that summer and will he be able to regain his partner's trust before it's too late?

A Little Gem of A Book!

This is a talented author who has created a most beguiling mystery--though it is far more, in Silk Stocking Road. It contains some of the same ingredients as To Kill A Mocking Bird. Besides bringing to life a varied and interesting cast of characters, Landreth has brought forth the social issues that fester in this small town in the years right after the great depression--social issues that plague many like places, even today.
The book captures the essence of the time period while revealing to the reader that many things haven't cahnged all that much.
Woven around the lives of people who populate this small town are many secrets, a murder that's not been solved, a romance that is rekindled, and family matters that need to be resolved.
From the opening page, this book captures the reader's imagination. Excellent writing, great book, very well done.
PS: It's been rumored that this book was burned in her home town because of some of the issues surrounding the factual inspired book. It is a work of fiction but some people felt other wise.
