Overview

By overwhelming popular demand, Stoo Hample’s 1961 classic now features a reissue of the recording that inspired a generation of gigglers.

"I am silly,
You are silly,
All of us are silly,
Willy."

And everything in THE SILLY BOOK and THE SILLY RECORD is the silly-willynilliest! There are songy sills (oops!)—silly songs, silly stories, silly poems, silly secrets, silly things to do, a silly good-night, and even silly nothings. Anyone who reads this book—and hears this CD—will laugh like anything, or else turn into a bathtub. First published almost fifty years ago, when it became an uproariously silly success, THE SILLY BOOK and its companion, THE SILLY RECORD, are guaranteed to cause children (and nostalgic adults) to giggle like gigglecopters, roll on the floor, and cheer "Boodleheimer, Boodleheimer" (CLAP! CLAP! CLAP!).

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"Stoo Hample is the da Vinci of Daft, the Socrates of Screwy, and the Gershwin of Goofy. His book is mordant, scintillating, pungent, and deeply profound, but it's just a bit too silly for me." — Norton Juster, author of THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH — Norton Juster

"Stoo Hample's THE SILLY BOOK is more than forty years old and just as silly as ever. Me, too. Which is why I still love it. So do my grandchildren." — Mary Rodgers, author of FREAKY FRIDAY — Mary Rodgers

"THE SILLY BOOK is back again. It's the epitome of Stoo Hample himself. His crazy sense of humor and laughter — his unique frolic with the sound and fun in words — is like having Stoo himself in the room making us laugh." — Charlotte Zolotow, publisher emerita and children's book author — Charlotte Zolotow Award

"THE SILLY BOOK is — ha ha — so silly — ha ha — that I have trouble — ha ha — thinking about it while writing this — ha ha ha ha — blurb. I mean, have you noticed that the first two — ha ha — letters in Hample are Ha? I mean — ha ha — isn't that — ... It's so — ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. Forgive me." — Jules Feiffer — Jules Feiffer

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
Silly it is, in spades. The book is a collection of poems for young children that use slapstick humor, sounds and repetition to entertain. The word silly is included in the title of every selection and the author does deliver. There is a trip to the moon to see a fuzzy moon goon. Gong, Gong, Bong, Bong, this is a silly song. Silly stuff with numbers reminds that I would rather be one than none. A silly secret gets shared with such laughter that it is forgotten in no time. A great deal of focus on mixing things ups; call mommy daddy and call daddy mommy. Brush your bed and go right to teeth. Be prepared for some high jinks if you find yourself reading this to an adventuresome youngster. The collection of poems is profusely illustrated with silly little spot illustrations that are predominately red, yellow and black. High-energy artwork fits with the silliness of this collection. The accompanying CD has many of the poems set to music with silly sound effects. Credits at the end identify the instruments used throughout. Reviewer: Kristin Harris
