Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"What a great idea, and how beautifully and accessibly laid out. I am delighted to have George and Bearsy both represented." —Jules Feiffer, illustrator of The Phantom Tollbooth and author of The Daddy Mountain
Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
Laughs galore will be found in the books that fill this volume featuring silly books. An introduction showcases the benefits of "sharing humor with children." It addresses how parents can share silly books with children and also how libraries can be used as a partner. Extensive research has been done to find the cream of the crop in humor. This book is organized in five sections: picture books, easy readers, chapter books, poetry books, and graphic novels and manga. Each section includes titles, author, and illustrators, and a synopsis of the books. Entries are listed alphabetically by author. Several books, such as Miss Nelson is Missing, Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, Yertle the Turtle, and Hank the Cow Dog, are familiar. Others that will leave children laughing include Rescue Bunnies, Walter's Tail, George Washington's Cow, and How to Grow Up and Rule the World. End material consists of the Robbie Hall of Fame Guide to the Funniest Children's Authors and Illustrators plus an index. This reference makes an excellent to have in schools and in libraries to allow adults to order silly books for readers and listeners. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
School Library Journal
This guide differs in two ways from Reid's Read-Alouds: Selections for Children and Teens (2009) and Reid's Read-Alouds 2: Modern Day Classics from C.S. Lewis to Lemony Snicket (2011, both ALA) as it is written more as a guide for parents than for librarians. The books are organized by format: picture books, easy readers, chapter books (fiction), poetry collections, and graphic novels and manga. Some titles date back to 1987, such as Keiko Kasa's Wolf's Chicken Stew, but all of them are still available. Each annotation gives a detailed description of the book and a taste of the kind of humor it employs. It also lists any companion books (which may or may not be in print). No grade or age levels are included. While this isn't vital information when choosing a read-aloud, parents may want, or need, a bit more guidance in selecting an appropriate title. That said, when looking for something fun to read to a child or group of youngsters, this source will be used over and over again.—Renee McGrath, Nassau Library System, NY
