Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
In yet another adaptation to board book format, Wood's amusing story works quite well. Toddlers and others will chuckle at the heroine with her springy red hair, purple dress, and ruffled pantaloons walking backwards and upside down into town. It makes no sense and the situation is absurd, but the lively characters and funny pictures will bring lots of smiles. 1999 (orig.
Children's Literature - Susie Wilde
Several masters of rhyme create new books. In Silly Sally Wood conceives a nursery rhyme character who's new in invention, but classic in spirit. "Silly Sally went to town, / walking backwards, upside down." As she travels she meets a host of characters just as goofy as she. Amazingly, Wood includes conflict, character interactions, humor to inspire giggles, sunny pictures, a suitable resolution and makes it all look simple!
From the Publisher

"Exploding with whimsy, humor, and zest . . . Be prepared to read this one a thousand times!"—Booklist (starred review)

"The characters in Wood's sunny, simple pen and watercolor illustrations fairly bounce off the page in this exuberant cumulative rhyme . . . A surefire read-aloud."—Kirkus Reviews (pointer review)

    WOW!!!

I truly enjoy this book, and find it very fun and amusing. My preschools kids want to hear it over and over again. We now sing it almost daily, and I have made hats to go along with the characters in the book. I recommend this book to everyone.

    Terrific book!

This book was a gift for my 21 mos old daughter last Christmas. We've read this book countless times since then. More than a year later, it's still in our nighttime rotation.

There's something about Sally being upside down that captures my daughter's imagination and fascinates her still.

I enjoy reading it too. It's clever and cute.

I highly recommend this book and the others by Audrey and Don Wood. :)

    BEST BOOK

I used to read this when I was younger,I had memorized it and pretended I could read when I rang true the wonderful story. I really suggest this to all toddlers, and even adults. This is an all time classic

    Walking Backwards into Town

My twins had the main phrase memorized before turning two and a half. Warning: they also try to stand on their heads now, too!

    Absolutely love it!!

I love the story, and the CD is wonderful! It has two tracks, one with page turn signals, one without. The background music is addicting and has just the right volume to go along with the reading. If you love silly, than this is the story for you!

Fun to read over and over again

My granddaughter's favorite book. She loves the illustrations and the anticipation of the sequence of characters. It is fun to be silly and Silly Sally demonstrates that as she goes to town.

    Fantastic to Read Out Loud!

This was a delightful bit of fun to read! Silly Sally is written in fun rhyming prose. The illustrations are bright and engaging.

This is a board book that I would buy for my kids because I know that we would read it over and over and over again. I love books that have rhythm and rhyme, that you can read almost like a song. A fantastic book!

Great picture book for many ages

This is one of my favorite children's picture books, and I have give it as a present several times. It is good for both preschoolers, whose parents will also enjoy it. It is also good for early readers leasring their phonics. I even used it when I was tutoring third graders who needed a lot of help with their reading but would find some of the early readers too young for them. It was one of their favorites also. It does not have much of a story line but as the repetiont builds it is just plain fun to read out loud.

    more from this reviewer

    great quick bedtime book

My daughter asks for this every night. It's short enough that she does not lose interest and she loves the characters. She likes to look for Neddy Buttercup on every page and at almost 2 years old, she knows every word. Of course her favorite part is the tickles at the end.

Silly Sally is a great story for young readers.

I used this book when I was teaching and my granddaughter enjoys the story now. The pattern lends itself to creative writing and the rhythm makes it so much fun.
