Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - J. H. Diehl
This entertaining early reader follows the adventures of Sausage, a dachshund-like canine named for his shape, and a hamster named Hammy. Sausage and Hammy reside with human children Elly and Jack, their grandmother Gran, and two mean-spirited family cats, Fitz and Spatz. Sausage receives plenty of attention from the humans, until the day Jack brings Hammy home from school to live with them during a vacation. Suddenly Sausage learns what it feels like to be ignored. A crisis occurs when Hammy gets lost in the house. Sausage embarks on a journey to find him, saves the hamster from falling into the clutches of the evil cats, and receives hero treatment from the humans. After that Sausage and Hammy become fast friends and, together, they get loads of human attention. This fifty-page reader is divided into six chapters, with black-and-white illustrations. The book originally appeared in the United Kingdom and is reprinted as part of the publisher's "Read-it! Chapter Books" series. Despite the lack of color illustrations, children will be engaged by Sausage's amusing shape and engaging eyes.
