Children's Literature - Carol Raker Collins
A cross between a chapter book and a comic book, this is one in a series of "Read-it! Chapter Books" intended for the transitional reader. The targeted child could be a second-grade reader extending reading skills or a third or fourth grader building confidence in reading skills. The many pictures will help the child get through the chapters. Also, the zany subject matter will entertain a range of readers. Sausage is the appropriately named dachshund that eats sausages (of course!) and lives with two cats, Fitz (the sneaky one) and Spatz (the bully). Both cats like to play tricks on poor Sausage and especially enjoy scaring him. To prove that he is not really afraid, Sausage accepts their challenge to spend the night in a haunted house. In that house, the cats creep and sneak, rattle chains, hiss and howl, and dress up in sheets. But the cats' attempts to scare Sausage backfire on them, and in the end Sausage proves he is the brave one while the others are mere "scaredy-cats." The story and pictures are a little—but not very—scary, and kids should enjoy reading about the dog's trials and success. There are other "Silly Sausage" books in the series.
