Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Chances are that you've never been to Silly Street. If you had, the pink elephant races, flying squirrel circus, and the pony that eats fried baloney would not be as surprising as they are. Fortunately, for our first stroll down this hilariously abnormal place, we have comedian Jeff Foxworthy to show us all the sights and Steve Björkman's whimsical illustrations to put them in proper perspective. Another collection of funny poems from the team that brought us Dirt on My Shirt.
Children's Literature - Susan Treadway M.Ed
"Sometimes you're silly/And you know that it's true./When you're feeling that way,/There are things you can do." Thus, this famous comedian-author freely offers another rib-tickling romp through rhythm and rhyme while delightfully animated characters fill every page. Although geared for younger readers, everyone who picks up the book will keep turning pages wanting more of Foxworthy's wit and humor. Poems cover all sorts of topics, locations and emotions as Silly Street is explored. Many are quite short and would be great fun to memorize and act out. The longest poem is five stanzas long, but short lines make swift recitations possible. Each one is excellent for read-aloud—no matter the audience. As the reader or listener discovers ways to continue the silliness, various characters pop out on Silly Street with their ever unique ways. Whether one has a yen for hats or pancakes or goats, or prefers other topics, there are no disappointments here There are also flowers, marbles, balloons, petting zoo, merry-go-round, sandbox, popsicles and tree house. Sound fairly normal? Might boredom set in after a few minutes? Not likely. Why, it is "Boo Boo McGrew" at the petting zoo where there is an ostrich to ride, a pig that flips on a trampoline and a cow that calmly declares, "Quack!" Find lost or unusual marbles at Mister Mark's Marble Store. At the "House of Clocks," things might be confusing since Mel only sells socks. He simply explains, "Socks are the thing/That makes the world sing,/'Cause they're warm and keep/Your feet from stinking!" There is much more to discover during a whimsical jaunt along Silly Street. Find "Pigeon Lady," "Hats and Halos," "Pogostick Pete," "Sweet Tooth,""Daily Parade," "Bubble Gum Tree," and "Perpetual Puddle." Teachers might engage students with language arts fundamentals using this book, of course, but there are unlimited ways to incorporate language using a variety of poems in content areas. As mentor text, writing prompts, dramatic expressions, short humor breaks, welcome distractions or buddy reading, children and adults will want to return to Silly Street over and over again. School Library Journal
K-Gr 2–In 27 simple poems, Foxworthy takes readers on an adventure down Silly Street and back. “In the heart of the city/Is a place people meet./It’s this and it’s that/And it’s called Silly Street.” Each selection describes one of the street’s highlights, from Mel’s House of Clocks that only sells socks to the “Daily Parade” to “The Best Sandbox Ever.” The singsong verses are good fun even if the rhythm sometimes falters. Colorful and detailed cartoon illustrations help bring many of the sights to life.–Julie Roach, Cambridge Public Library, MA

Silly Street: As Silly As It Gets

If you remember and still love those Shell Silverstein classics, then you'll love sharing this book with your little ones. A book like this introduces characters, rhyme, rhythm, imagination, and just plain silly fun to beginning readers. It's one of those books that whisks you away to an imaginary place that is as close as home and as far away as your creative mind can take you.

It's an excellent read and your little ones will want to travel there again and again!

    WITTY, ENTERTAINING, COMICAL

I also purchased Jeff's first book DIRT ON MY SHIRT and loved it. This one is just as entertaining and comical. I gave them to my grandson as birthday presents last year and this year. He loves them and enjoys reading them again and again. Good work Jeff.

    Silly Street by Jeff Foxworthy

I recently purchased the book "Silly Street" by Jeff Foxworthy. Not only did my 7 year old son extrememly love it, so did I! He asks me to read it every day sometimes twice a day. My son also asked for Jeff Foxworthy's other book "Dirt On My Shirt", it was also a huge hit with him. I would recommend both books to any parents who have kids, the books are fun to read as well as entertaining for both kids and parents.

    Great Childrens Book

Silly Street is a book of funny poems to be shared with your children and/or grandchildren. I bought this book to read to my 4 year old granddaughter and she loves it. The illustrations and funny poems are done with children in mind. Silly Street, Hats and Halos, Lost Your Marbles, Boo Boo McGrew, Perpetual Puddle, Mister Billy and House of Popsicles are just a few of the poem titles in the book. They will keep you and your children/grandchildren laughing and coming back for more. This is one book my granddaughter wants me to read to her everytime she visits. When I read the silly poems she always asks me questions about each one based on the pictures that are associated with the poems. Families will enjoy reading this book together. Silly Street will bring out the kid in all of us and I highly recommend buying this book.
