What Every Chessplayer Needs to Know

Jeremy Silman's Complete Endgame Course provides a progressive series of practical lessons about how to play chess endgames.

Like most books about chess endgames, this book covers the basic types of endgames and how to play them. However, the distinguishing feature of this book is that it breaks down the lessons by skill level, from beginner to master, and gives lessons tailored to each level of player based on what they are likely to need to know at their skill level.

His lessons are presented clearly and memorably, and at times with humor. For example, he gives advice on how to draw in a winning position, if you are playing your spouse and do not want to sleep on the sofa!

I have read half of this book, up to my skill level, and I look forward to reading more when I improve a bit. I am happy to report that it already has enabled me to draw a tournament game that would have been lost otherwise, against an opponent who was otherwise much better than me.

    Fantastic Layout

I have Basic Chess Endings by R.Fine, but this Chess Ending book tops them all off. It teaches you the Endings that you need to know according to your USCF Rating, which is great when I teach my students coming into chess so that I don't overwhelm them with too much. I used this book recently before a tournament as a good refresher and it helped give me the 100% confidence I needed in my Endgame for the Class Section I belonged to.

This Ending could be the Beginning You've Dreamed About

Overcomes the dread every chess player feels of studying endgames. While most players spend way too much time on openings, the study of endgames is more likely to result in making you a Tiger at the chessboard. Silman offers tailor-made instruction to fit a player's individual chess rating group. This may be more gimmicky than practical yet the large book format and numerous diagrams do work quite well. Some advice, start at the beginning no matter what your chess rating. Not a comprehensive study but concentrates on what is likely to be encountered in actual play. For example, the ending Knight and Bishop vs lone King is not even covered which may distress some but all in all an excellent endgame book with an enjoyable format.

    Great "Teaching" book....

I would highly advise anyone who wants to improve their end game techniques, to get this book and study. There are lots of examples and the course describes many of the normal end game conditions that crop up in actual games. This is a must for anyone who wants to "win in the end"... Great Book...

    Thanks,
