Editorial Reviews

VOYA
Author of both inspirational fiction and nonfiction for adults and youth, Brouwer has revised and republished two of his adult novels featuring Sam Keaton in the Legends of Laramie series, which originally appeared in print in 1994. Evening Star opens with cowboy Sam Keaton riding into Laramie in 1874 and immediately finding trouble. After coming across a man beating up an Indian, Keaton tries to stop the attacker, only to be forced to shoot him in self-defense. Arrested and jailed, Keaton awaits trial but manages to escape with the help of the Indian, a mysterious woman, and the town's sheriff. While running from a posse, Keaton becomes involved in the search for missing gold and in a crime that has ties to his own past. In Silver Moon, Keaton successfully has cleared up all the mysteries in Evening Star and has become the sheriff of Laramie. When two men are found dead in one of the town's bank vaults and a considerable amount of money is missing, the manager of the bank calls Keaton in to investigate. What at first seems to be a simple case of a robbery gone wrong turns out to be a complicated investigation that takes Keaton from Laramie to Denver in search of answers. Both books are a terrific mix of Western fiction and historical adventure stories, with a bit of mystery and a hint of romance thrown in for good measure. As can be expected from an inspirational publisher, faith is an important part of the plots of both books, but the author skillfully and subtly weaves this element in so that it does not overwhelm either the story or the reader. Both titles are excellent choices for teens who enjoy traditional Westerns or historical novels set in the Old West. VOYA CODES: 4Q 3P SA/YA (Better than most, marred only by occasional lapses; Will appeal with pushing; Senior High, defined as grades 10 to 12; Adult and Young Adult). 2000, Bethany House, 319p, Trade pb. Ages 16 to Adult. Reviewer: John Charles VOYA, February 2001 (Vol. 23, No.6)
Library Journal
"God, I believe, is a patient cowboy himself, going deep and wide into the mesquite for stray souls like mine," claims the gunfighter wearing the name of Samuel L. Keaton. And God has to be patient with Sam as he evades a posse out of Laramie, struggles to understand why an Indian would help him, and searches for a deeper meaning in his life. This true-blue Western adventure straight out of the 1870's is destined for every collection.
