While he doesn't descend into preachiness, the charismatic singer does make an effort to say something of note, as on the anti-domestic violence rant "Never Again." The foursome work the heavier end of the spectrum admirably too, hitting a thudding grunge groove on "Hollywood" and "Where Do I Hide" (which suggests the sound of Sub Pop circa 1989). Brawny, yes, but brainiacs can dig in, too.

Industrial-strength rock & roll is back with a vengeance on the earnest Silver Side Up by Nickelback. The band wastes no time in getting into its brand of dark, high-octane rock. The album opener "Never Again," about spousal abuse, thrusts out of the starting gate with rocket-fueled intensity. Lead singer/guitarist/lyricist Chad Kroeger does not mince words in his portrayals of the darker sides of the human experience, and that is what Silver Side Up is essentially about. Nickelback's music is issue-oriented on the domestic and personal front, and it's a refreshing change of pace in 2001's sea of angry rockers. Another familial subject is tackled on the pounding "Too Bad." The song describes an emotionally and physically absent father figure as seen through the eyes of a regretful adult-child looking back. The cut that broke the band to mainstream audiences is "How You Remind Me," a thundering, mid-tempo rock track marked by thick chords and a brooding tone. Kroeger's voice is filled with weariness as he well captures the self-defeated feelings one experiences when being emotionally dissected by a lover. Such words as "'cause living with me must have damn near killed you" painfully zero in on the breakdown of the human spirit when it's badgered enough. Because, sadly, many have found themselves in this situation, the song connects with listeners. Coupled with a powerful and moody soundtrack, it's no wonder it took off on the radio. Grunge pays a visit on the set's closing number, "Good Times Gone." This well-crafted song slowly builds in intensity -- from the intro's fingered guitar notes and understated vocals, to the gradual addition of instruments, to Kroeger's explosive vocal release at the song's end, which retreats back into softly strummed guitar notes. "Good Times Gone" is reminiscent of a Pearl Jam number, and this is no surprise; Silver Side Up was co-produced by Rick Parashar, who has worked with Seattle's finest. Nickelback's style is edgy aggressive rock peppered with a taste of grunge. The band can easily sit alongside Staind and 3 Doors Down, among other like acts. However, what Nickelback has in spades and what gives the group an upper hand over its peers is intensity and raw passion. Some bands finger the crap out of their guitars and relentlessly beat away at the drums, crafting songs that boast the intensity of an electric storm. Nickelback ups the ante by offering realistic storytelling that listeners can relate to.

    this band just keeps getting worse and worse whenever they release a new album

    this band is beyond terrible the drums are off tune the guitar work is very sloppy this band is down right annyoing this not good music its with annyoing dumb and silly this album is one silly example of how this band started getting popluiar i sure hope nickelback breaks up in the near future because they seriously do stink

    this band is pathetic

    nickelback has been around since 1996 and allison becker on vh1 stated that this band may not stay together due to chad taking complete control of the band nickelback almost broke up in 2001 due to chad having to go to rehab for having a serious beer drinking problem chad states in interviews that nickelback is either the next megadeth or slayer or metallica i asked chad a question once at one nickelback concert he threw up all over me chad is nothing but a disgusting freak show i sure hope nickelback breaks up in the future because nickelback is nickelweak

    NICKELBACK IS THE BEST BAND EVER

    i love this cd i have been listening to this band since kindergarden.its my all time favorite band if you havent heard of them buy there cds.i would recomend this cd. NICKELBACK ROCKS YOU MUST BUY THIS CD

    THIS CD IS SOOOO GOOD!!!!!

    I bought this cd and waited for it in the mail for about a week, but I was so excited it felt like months. When it came, I listened to it all the time, and I love this cd. I now have all the Nickelback cd's and await others. Nickelback is the best, and the dvd of their concert is also excellent.

    Alternative metal?

    Nickleback's music is really original. They opproach their songwriting in a less-than-main-stream way. Some people may find it difficult to listen to their output, but the music sounds good. Their single 'This is how you remind me' is great.

    Aussies luv Nickelback too!

    Heyhey I'm from Perth in Western Australia, and i think that this is the most crankingly awsome album ive ever heard. Chad's voice is bloody rockin as. "Never Again" is the best song I've ever heard. It is sooo deep and meaningful yet at the same time harsh. Any American girls who wanna chat send us an email.

    The Absolute Best $18.00 I Have Ever Spent!!!!

    I am new to the whole Nickelback thing because I have been in Europe for quite some time, but this is the absolute best thing I have ever heard in my life!!!! Chad Kroeger's lyrics are incredible, they ring so true, and they resonate in your mind long after the album has finished playing. Kroeger's deep voice is beautifully counterbalanced by the rest of the Nickelback team, and after listening to it, I was begging for more. This is a must have for any person who is even remotly interested in the current alternative/indie rock scene!!!!!!!

    i love this album

    this always cheers me up,'hollywood' is my favourite track,chad kroeger,mike kroeger,ryan peake and ryan vikedal are all geniuses.this album is pure gold.

    Silver Side Up is pure gold

    This cd, their 3rd release in the US, is jam packed with memorable guitar riffs and solos,all songs, are written by lead guitarist and vocalist, Chad Kroeger. With rockin tunes and killer lyrics, this is a must have for rock fans.

    This is a must buy CD!

    I think Nickelback is a great CD because I like their sound and their lyrics. It also makes you want to listen to all the song instead of just one. Once you have heard one of their songs you get hook on it. Also when you get done with this Nickelback CD, Silver Side Up, you want to go buy another one to see what else the group has come up with. I don't think I'm alone when I rank this CD with 5 stars. All of the other reviews that i read, ranked the CD the same as i did. This has to say something right?!?
