Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Hiding deep in the forest, Heart is harboring two unicorns from two evil men—Simon, her former master, and Tin Blackaby, a townsman who would eagerly sell the rare, magical animals to cruel Lord Dunraven. Heart had run away with Avamir, a mare, and the colt, Moonsilver, because Simon was going to have them slaughtered for profit. It wasn't until they had escaped that Heart noticed a bump between Moonsilver's eyes; she thought he had been injured, but soon realized that a horn was pushing its way through his skin. Closer inspection of Avamir revealed that she was scarred in the same place. Sometime in the past, her horn had been lost or taken. The situation becomes more complicated when Moonsilver takes an arrow to the leg and becomes gravely ill. Heart knows the only solution is to take the unicorns back to Ash Grove to her only friend, Ruth Oakes. Ruth would know the right herbs to use to save the colt. Such a risky move could put her in jail and send the unicorns to Lord Dunraven. This is the second installment in a series of chapter books, "The Unicorn's Secret," for transitional readers. The text is written simply and incorporated into ten chapters with scattered black and white illustrations. Readers will enjoy the adventure and cheer for Heart and the unicorns when they escape a second time, then will reach for the next book to follow the story. 2001, Aladdin Paperbacks,
