Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lori M. Saporosa
Grandma Rose's wittiness and compassion helps Simon survive a childhood that is filled with name calling, being laughed at, and feeling isolated and different from the other kids. Her trick is teaching Simon how to deal with the other children's "baits" through five specific steps. These steps include ignoring, distracting, agreeing, and/or laughing with the teasing and removing himself from the situation. By giving him options that could fit into any situation Grandma Rose is enabling Simon to defend himself and yet stay out of trouble. These are noteworthy tips for elementary-aged and older children who are subjected to ridicule, and as a result, low self-esteem. This story would be most beneficial to middle school-aged children. Kids in elementary grades may have difficulty with the advanced vocabulary and length of text on a page. However, it could be read aloud and discussed with them. The book closes with a special note to parents and teachers regarding helpful tips to initiating discussion with a child about this subject.
School Library Journal
Gr 1-4-Simon experiences a "bad hair day" after his sister cuts out portions of his hair to remove some chewing gum. When his friends tease him, the boy rushes home in tears. He finds consolation when his Grandmother Rose tells him "a fish story" that illustrates the pitfalls of providing an easy target for teasing by "biting the hook." Simon's self-esteem returns, and he rejoins his friends and withstands their comments by following his grandmother's sage advice. Burnett concludes with useful information for adults about teasing and instructions for using the book. The "sticks and stones" theme is patently obvious, and is presented in a didactic and patronizing manner that glosses over the real emotional turmoil children experience. The grandmother's wisdom and Simon's transparent gullibility also contribute to the condescension. The full-color illustrations are of average quality. Notwithstanding the positive theme of the book, the story is too contrived to make it plausible for bibliotherapy.-Paul Kelsey, East Baton Rouge Parish Public Library, LA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
Midwest Book Review
All children experience the taunts and teasings of other children. Karen Burnett is an elementary school counselor with more than 20 years experience and has written a wonderful picturebook story (charmingly illustrated by Laurie Barrows) that offers an intriguing, entertaining, and proven technique that kids can employ when feeling hurt or confused as a result of teasing by friends, peers or siblings.Simon's Hook: A Story About Teases and Put-Downs helps children to recognize they have choices and through the use of a fishing analogy, Burnett shows them how to "swim free" of feeling helpless, trapped, stuck, or powerless and able only to hit back or run away. Simon's Hook is recommended reading for boys and girls ages 6 and up, and a "must" for all school and public library collections.
Parent Council
I was so excited when I read this book! As a school counselor I have tried for years to explain to children how bullies "bait" them into arguments and fights. This picture book uses the analogy of fishing to help children understand this process. The "fish" use different techniques to avoid being "caught." I read this to a fifth grade class who really enjoyed the book and could relate to the problem of how to respond to "baits." The book is colorful, with cartoon-style illustrations. It is entertaining as well as informative and will appeal to elementary age children.

    A book for all children

I am a school counselor and have used this with many elementary students who are having difficulty being picked on or bullied. I am also using this as the basis for a push-in lession on friendship. I recommend every parent read this book with their children not only to help children learn skills but also to help parents learn these skills to better support thier child/ren. It may also be a window into their past and a means of making positive changes in their own lives.

a clever approach to handling teasing

As a school counselor, I recommend this book for teaching children about how to handle teasing and put downs. It`s more than lesson with it`s interesting story line and illustrations. The fish are charicatured in ways that almost every child can identify with.

    GREAT STORY AND EDUCATIONAL TOO!

Simon's Hook - A Story About Teases and Put-Downs is a great book for any child. BUT it is also a teaching tool with a highly original story and wonderful images. Children learn several ways to deal with teasing - from ignoring the teaser to changing the subject to avoiding situations, etc. (We don't want to give away the whole story). And the story is so good that children will pick it up again-and-again just to read - yet we know they are learning how to cope with teasing at the same time! Simon's Hook is a great addition to any family, school or library. From The Science Spiders Newsletter.

    Must Have!

Our school has purchased copies of this book for every classroom! It is a great resource for teachers and parents. The students love the lively illustrations and the down to earth explanations. Kids can be heard all over the school saying 'don't take the hook!' Our school counselor is using the book with students who have behavior problems. We strongly recommend this title and feel that at the very least every Library should have a copy.

A Must For Teachers and School Counselors

As a school counselor, K-12, I have used Simon's Hook as a tool to assist students K-6, in dealing with teasing. Students have shared with me how much they identify with Simon and can see how they too have 'bit' in the past when teased. Students welcome the strategies Simon and his Grandma have to give in dealing with teasing. I and several students thank Karen Gedig Burnett and Laurie Barrows for providing such a wonderful and useful book/tool!

    Our family loved it!

Simon's Hook - What a great way to learn about how to deal with teasing and bullies! The book started great discussions on times in my daughters life where she was being teased. She loved the visual of 'not biting the hook.' It even helps her when dealing with family members loving teases. She used to be really sensitive about things. Now she lets things go and has learned to laugh at herself too. The illustrations for Simon's Hook are so fun and lively! I highly recommend Simon's Hook!

Simon's Hook ---More than just Fishing!

As a school librarian I found the book, Simon's Hook, refreshing and useful for parents, teachers, and especially children. Burnett gives solid, workable alternatives for children dealing with common problems like teasing and put downs. I often think critics or reviewers do not deal with their audience---children. I felt the author knew how children react to those hurtful situations. I watched children react and use her suggestions in a very positive way. This is a subject area that is certainly present in most school situations and the author clearly has a handle on how to help kids from being 'hooked' by hateful comments of others. I think this story has a viable and necessary place in a children's library collection.
