Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Using both research studies and personal experiences, Ornish, a doctor of alternative medicine, presents a rather no-nonsense approach to diet, exercise, and intimacy for an improved quality of life. Ornish insists that he does not tell people what to do but that he does give information so listeners can make informed choices. The first hour of each program is taken from TV broadcasts and the second is a Q&A session. Simple Choices is a rather cursory overview of his ideas. He deals very briefly with diet, exercise, the human need for community, and the healing power of love and intimacy. He insists the latter are more powerful elements of healing than lifestyle changes. The Q&A portion is weak, since it merely repeats rather than elaborates. In contrast, The Healing Power of Love & Intimacy is a more in-depth program. Ornish focuses on "emotional and spiritual heart disease" and how it can be reversed like its physical equivalent. He talks a great deal about the need for group interaction and provides compelling statistics on correlative survival rates. Above all, he emphasizes treating the whole person rather than curing a single illness. He calls for a new model of medicine that will eventually prove its cost benefit. In the end, the listener wants to hear more from Ornish, a very high recommendation indeed.--Jeanne Leader, Everett Community Coll., WA
