Though Geiger-Rainer's book, Simple Church, has been out for the better part of two years, it remains high atop church leadership sales lists, and for good reasons. This is simply a great book. It is one that deliberately helps church leaders, professors, and denominational leaders understand how to understand how to create a life-transforming process for church growth and more importantly, Christian discipleship. Geiger-Rainer provide hard research-based evidence that four primary and guiding principles can be implemented into church ministries for impact and growth. This book has already been purchased by front-line church leaders, but many other have yet to get their copy. Other, newer, books have not replaced the need for this critical contribution and as one who trains leaders full-time, I agree with hundreds of thousands of others who have read this book-- it is a must-read and a MUST IMPLEMENT for every serious Century 21 church leader.

The book suggests that church ministry adopt a clear vision statement on what its goals are, then apply all chruch ministry around that vision. They also suggest that exising church ministries and functions that do not fit in with the church's vision statement be reevaluated, and if they do not fit into the vision statement of the church they should be restructured or eliminated altogether.
The premise of the book is very sound, having everyone in your chuch focusing on a clear message that will nurture spiritual growth and move through the church based upon where one is in their spiritual life makes plenty of sense. The book concentrates on four aspects of this concept; clarity, movement, alignment, and focus. They correctly state that Christ himself did not do anything complex in his gospel sharing ministry and give many examples of His work. What struck me while reading this book is that the author's vision could appy to many other groups or organizations that are completely non-religious. The only part of the book that I thought was dry was the constant statistical explanations and comparisons of churches who use these methods as opposed to those who do not. On the whole, it was a good book with interesting insights.

I've read them all... I'm a Pastor, that's what I do. I look for books and ideas that will finally start our church on the road to growth. I've known since day 1 that things like Vision, Purpose, and Value Statements were important, but I never really understood how to implement them, or what they really looked like in a real life church setting. Sorry, but I couldn't relate to Saddleback, Willowcreek, or North Point.
But after I read Simple Church, it was like the scales were removed. It all made sense! I have never read a book that has helped me and clarified my vision for our church that this book. I bought every copy our local book store had.
If you are a Pastor or in leadership at your church... this is a HAVE TO read. Thanks Thom!
