    Wonderful memories!

Sur La Table tells us in Simple Comforts that comfort food is ¿the kind of food that goes right to your soul and gives you a bit of tasty refuge from the stresses of the day.¿ I certainly agree with that! Smells and tastes can easily bring back childhood memories for me and in Simple Comforts many of my favorite classic recipes are upgraded to give them a bit of a new twist. My favorite is the Cinnamon Streusel Sour Cream Coffee Cake, with its moist crumb and sweet spices and my husband loves the Luxuriously Retro Beef Stroganoff with Buttered Noodles. Macaroni and cheese is overflowing with baked cheesy, yummy goodness when cooked in a cast iron pan. And, of course, there are desserts, cookies, brownies, pudding and more. Every single recipe in Simple Comforts had me oohing and ahhing, bringing back wonderful memories and motivating me to get in the kitchen and cook up some comfort.

    Real Comfort Food

This is a delightful little cookbook with lots of beautiful photos but best of all, tasty recipes featuring real comfort food. This is not a "health food" cookbook in that you won't find low-fat, sugar-free recipes. What you will find are recipes that use real ingredients like eggs, cheese, milk, and butter. Of course, one is always free to substitute low-whatever ingredients, but I sometimes wonder if substitutions make us end up eating more in an attempt to get the same level of satisfaction that a smaller amount of the real stuff would give. (I'm just saying.)

I tried the corn tortillas casserole which was delicious and I look forward to trying more from this book such as sour cream coffee cake, crispy fried chicken, garlic mashed potatoes, yukon gold and sweet potato gratin, and chocolate chunk bread pudding. Recipe categories include sweet breads, savory breads; soups, stews and sandwiches; main dishes, side dishes, and desserts.

Most of the recipes call for ingredients that can be found at larger grocery stores and substitutions are suggested for some specialty ingredients, such as monterey jack cheese if queso Chihuahua isn't available.

The beauty of this book makes it a great gift for any cook and the recipes are easy enough for beginners as well as more experienced cooks.

I received a copy of this book for review from the publisher but the opinion of it is my own and was not solicited nor required. If I didn't like the book I would say so.
