All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Featuring a broader array of styles than any previous Linda Ronstadt record, Simple Dreams reconfirms her substantial talents as an interpretive singer. Ronstadt sings Dolly Parton ("I Never Will Marry") with the same conviction as she sings the Rolling Stones ("Tumbling Dice"), and she manages to update Roy Orbison ("Blue Bayou") and direct attention to the caustic, fledgling singer/songwriter Warren Zevon ("Poor Poor Pitiful Me" and "Carmelita"). The consistently adventurous material and Ronstadt's powerful performance makes the record rival Heart Like a Wheel in sheer overall quality.

Linda Ronstadt's Simple Dreams by Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs

This version of "Simple Dreams" is a Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs remaster on gold CD taken from the original studio master recorded in the late seventies. Every song on it from "It's So Easy" to "Old Paint" is a gem. Written by such notables as Buddy Holly, Warren Zevon, Roy Orbison and JD Souther, Ronstadt again proves herself as a master of music interpretation--she is able to put her "stamp" on a tune that makes it all her own. "Blue Bayou," a big hit for Roy Orbison in the early sixties, is flawless in both Linda's vocal range and her ability to perform in the studio with "feeling." It's a heart stopper. Also, among my favorites on this CD is The Rolling Stones classic "Tumbling Dice." Only Linda could take a Stones' tune and deliver a powerful, flawless performance which easily rivals the original. "I Never Will Marry," a duet of Linda with Dolly Parton, is among the most beautiful songs ever recorded. It reaches in and grabs the listener and holds his/her attention from the opening note to the last. "Simple Dreams" follows the framework of Linda's previous records with Peter Asher as producer. Also, I must point out that she had the greatest L.A. studio musicians available. The powerful combination of Linda's seven octave range, Peter Asher's production, and the best of L.A.'s studio musicians culminates in a classic recording that stands in a category of its own. Mobile Fidelity went to great lengths to preserve the integrity of the original analog master so that we hear the music as it was meant to be heard. The bass tones are "rounded" and not "flat" and "overblown" like so many CDs that were transfered from analog to digital. Linda's vocals are crisp and not buried in the music like the first transfers of "Simple Dreams" from the 1980s. There is a distinct level of "separation" of the instruments not heard on the previous remasters--the old remasters are overly compressed and the instruments seem to be jumbled together in places. The album takes you through every range of emotion, displaying Linda's extreme versatility. "Simple Dreams" is due to be released on vinyl LP (also remastered by Mobile Fidelity) as well. I collect the gold CDs and LPs and I suggest that those who love this music buy copies of both. Buyers of this music should take the time to sit down and listen uninterupted and let the music take you on an emotional journey through your soul. It's powerful, meaningful, and plays on the listeners emotions in a way that few artists are able to do. Christopher Louviere
