Overview

Simple Gifts is a collection of instrumental versions of the songs of the Shakers, a charismatic Christian sect that flourished in the United States in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Guitarist William Coulter and cellist Barry Phillips are both members of the acoustic group Orison, and they draw on a pool of fellow Gourd-label musicians to support them, as well as Windham Hill artist Mike Marshall who appears on nearly all the tracks playing mandolin, mandocello, violin or viola. From the very familiar to the relatively obscure, this is a charming album that mixes the simplicity and liveliness of American folk music with the elegant reverence of hymns. ~ Backroads Music/Heartbeats

It's a shame that so much instrumental music gets lumped into the "New Age" category. While this CD is very pleasant to listen to, it is not the sort of music designed to relax, get in touch with your inner self, or any of the other trappings of real "new age" music. Instead, what we have here (and in most of the Gourd lable releases I've purchased) is a collection of songs, tastefully arranged and performed by artists that know their acoustic instruments inside and out. It lies somewhere between folk or traditional music and chamber orchestra, performed in small ensembles. Each verse and each chorus brings a new arrangement to the tune, keeping it interesting, and always gorgeous.
