    Great First Book +Good refresher

This is the best beginners book on freshwater aquariums I have ever read. It is very clear on setup, water analysis, water maintenance (a very critical step), and cycling of the tank. I have had serveral aquariums over the years and picked this up as a refresher and found new updated information in a clear mannor. Good teaching tool for my children.

essential handbook to keeping freshwater fish

this book tells you EVERYTHING you need to know to maintain happy healthy fish. Easy to understand and very well organized. I've kept fish according to the methods in this book for years with great success. I highly recommend it.

The BEST book for a beginner!

I would not be the happy aquarium owner that I am without this book. This author has it on the money about what to do and what not to do. His three caveats: change water often, try not to add 'treatments' to the water, and feeding small portions has worked for me. I have referred to this book often over the 3 years I have kept fish. Easy to understand, the author can keep you out of trouble and make you successful. This is the one to buy!

Good book except for chapter on stocking suggestions!

This was the very first freshwater aquarium book I read cover to cover, and I found it to be very helpful. The one caveat is that I personally believe the author is a bit over-ambitious with regards to his stocking plans, which are contained in later chapters. He tends to encourage keeping to many large fish in too small of tanks, in my opinion. Other than that, I enjoyed this book and refer to it often. It has a wonderful chapter on the basics of water chemistry and tank cycling.

    Outstanding Book

This is an outstanding book. It strikes the perfect balance between a beginner book and a book suitable for the experienced hobbyist. I am brand new to the aquarium hobby and was able to successfully set up my first aquarium using this book. I would not risk failure by trusting the advice of inexperienced sales clerks at pet stores, many of whom have no idea what the science is behind keeping an aquarium. Instead I would trust this book and use it has a guide to get into the hobby. It's also one of the few up to date books...most others have mid 90's and prior copyrights.

    I liked it.

I found this book helpful in even setting up a community. It gives suggestions for a community on 29 gallon tanks and bigger. Very easy reading with colorful pictures. It's almost as though a friend was talking to you and giving you help.
