    A reviewer

VEGETABLE GARDENING covers the A-Z of vegetables and their care. The book gives best planting depths and best planting row distances for all kinds of vegetables, from alliums to brassicas to cucurbits. It goes into fertilizing, pinching and watering schedules. It includes disease- and pest-busting strategies. Against pests, it mentions preventive measures such as trap by companion and sacrificial plantings. So plant sacrificial basil. Nearby vegetables won't be touched. Or surround them with strong-smellers. Who sniffs milder vegetable smells in the middle of pest-repelling marigolds, nasturtiums and onions? The book says vegetable gardening doesn't have to be just useful. It can also be picture-pretty. So choose same old plants in different colors. Use red-cobbed sweet corn, red-flowered cauliflower, red-stemmed chard, and red-veined lettuce. Or use different plants such as trailing strawberries. Plant what costs more in stores, such as asparagus and pink-streaked Borlotti beans. For picture-pretty is best done first small-scale with hanging baskets, pots, trellises, and window boxes. And small-scale always gives a good idea of how much feeds how many people. The book is helpfully written, organized, indexed and illustrated. It's what readers get with Dorling Kindersley's simple steps to success series.
