Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
With Simple Things, piano sensation Jim Brickman aims to capture the power of life's pure essence -- or to recapture it, actually, from the fast-paced, high-pressure world we live in today. Where some instrumental players dwell in the airier realms of the ambient and atmospheric, Brickman plays with a poignantly romantic and lyrical edge. When his elegant piano takes the lead, supported chamber-style by Tracy Silverman on violin and viola and Thea Suits-Silverman on flute, the music seeps in and stirs the emotions. The pieces range from the lyrical and stately to his signature "conversational" style "Another Tuesday Morning" and "Journey" in which musical phrases mingle...

The pieces range from the lyrical and stately to his signature "conversational" style "Another Tuesday Morning" and "Journey" in which musical phrases mingle in dialogue. True to the theme, the most stirring piece is the simplest, "Catching Twilight," where Brickman plays with contrasting dark passages to deepen the emotional impact. Other standouts include "One and Only," which begins with the languid plucking of Silverman's violin and grows to a touching melodic duet, and "Serenade," where the pianist's style is augmented by au courant drum programming. As he proved with his all-star PBS performances, Brickman has friends in high places. This time out it's country star Rebecca Lynn Howard, who adds vocal charm to the title tack. Tom Douglas offers a hushed and respectful rendition of "A Mother's Day," but it's the spacious sensitivity Brickman expresses through his fingers that makes his albums so popular. The high-powered, Bolton-esque ballad "It Must Be You," featuring vocals by All-4-One, closes the album. His willingness to reach for ever-loftier heights of romance yields fresh fruit here, but Brickman is at his best when he follows his own advice: It's the simple things that ultimately mean the most.
All Music Guide - Stacia Proefrock
Fans of Jim Brickman usually love him for what he does best, simple, lush, romantic solo piano music. Recent recordings like Visions of Love and Gift have attempted to add layers to that base by adding orchestration or soaring vocals to the mix, but such things can muddle the purity of the music. Simple Things marks the return to Brickman's foundation -- beautiful, gentile songs with only minimum accompaniment, featuring ten instrumentals followed by three ballads, including the adult contemporary styled title track sung by Rebecca Lynn Howard. With the exception of the title track, which earns its way onto the album, the vocal tracks seem a bit tacked on, but the first portion of the album is first-rate solo piano music, and Simple Things will likely reinforce Brickman's solid place in the hearts of fans of new age music.

One of my favorite easy listening CD's

This is one of my favorite CD's. Many instumentals, soft songs. I enjoy it both to listen to as the activity or as background music while working on other things.
