A Good Place to Start for Simplifying

I've read many books on simplifying but always appreciate a book like this that is full of simple, doable, common sense tips anyone can implement without being overwhelmed. With over 1,500 ideas for eliminating stress in the home, personal life, and professional life, this book offers a plan to live a peaceful and productive life free of clutter.

The book is divided into five parts: A World Gone Complex (the quest for simplicity and general principles for achieving it), Simplify Your Castle (room-by-room solutions), Streamline Home Paperwork (personal finances, home office), Simplify Your Professional Life (efficiency, communication), and The Personal Touch (relationships, nutrition, exersise, leisure). Ideas are offered for organization, decluttering, cleaning solutions, and more.

While there aren't any unique ideas in this book that aren't also covered in similar books, the author has a way of putting the reader at ease with the process so that it isn't intimidating. He offers questions one can ask when determining whether to purchase something, what to keep or get rid of, and what type of organization system will work best according to one's lifestyle and personal taste. The ideas offered are very doable, affordable, and often don't require purchasing anything to make them work since most of us already have what we need to organize once we get rid of the unused excess.

I especially appreciated that the book includes photos that seem to be from real homes, giving a realistic view of what simpler living can look like. I also liked that Davidson actually encourages the reader to hang on to a reasonable amount of stuff and avoid going overboard to the minimalistic extreme that some simplification gurus encourage as this often has the opposite affect and makes life harder for those of us who live in the real world. I found that to be a refreshing approach compared to other books on simplification that I've read that tend to make the reader feel guilty for not wanting to part with everything that isn't nailed down. The author helps the reader make these personal choices without imposing his own.

I recommend this book as a good starting place for anyone who desires to live more simply while enjoying what is meaningful, comforting, and useful.

I received a copy of this book for review from the publisher but the opinion of it is my own and wasn't solicited, nor was a positive review required.

When I first learned about this book I was excited, because it sounded like it was something I could use. Despite my high expectations, when the book arrived, I found that it was indeed the right one for me. It is easy to follow the advice that is offered. For me, the book helps me on my personal journey to make my life less complex, starting with my house, and moving on from there. The chapter on organizing your bathroom because its such a small but highly used space! Armed with Simple Living I feel that I am much more focused and have a greater incentive to achieve a simpler lifestyle and not slip back into old, complicated ways.
