Lind and Hockman-Wert, a dietitian and a journalist, respectively, worked with more than 400 contributors and volunteer testers to compile this recipe collection cum alphabetical directory of produce. Like Peter Berley and Melissa Clark's Fresh Food Fast, it is organized by season. Recipes are further broken down into "Breads and Breakfast," "Soups," "Salads," "Sides," "Main Dishes," "Desserts," and "Extras," which make menu planning easy. Just like the two previous entries in the "World Community Cookbook" series (Doris Janzen Longacre's More-with-Less Cookbook and Joetta Handrich Schlabach's Extending the Table), this one communicates the Mennonite religious values of sharing and appreciation. Included among the contributors' homespun stories and memories are some biblical quotes and even a few prayers, but readers interested in mindful eating, fair trade food, the slow food movement, and environmental issues are not likely to be offended. This would nicely complement Deborah Madison's Local Flavors: Cooking and Eating from America's Farmers' Markets.     I swear by this

    I am a recipe cook and I received this as a gift about a year ago. I LOVE it! Nearly every dish that I have made out of this book has been amazing, even when I've questioned the ingrediants. The ones that haven't been amazing, have still been very good. I also love the fact that it is separated by season, so all you need to do is flip to the current (or recent) season and you have a great list of recipes from breads to salads, to main dishes all using ingredients that will be fresh and in season. Also, there are excellent guides on produce (how to buy, cook, etc), grains, meat-alternatives, and the like. This is a very well-rounded and delicious book! I recommend it to everyone and now I'm looking into getting more in the series.

    Add this to your cookbook collection

    A few years ago I realized that I did not know when fruits and vegetables were in-season. I purchased a poster from an agricultural program which shows when produce is in season in the Northeastern U.S. (Virginia to Maine). However, finding good seasonal recipes has always been a challenge. I often search the web looking for a recipes containing a particular ingredient (garlic scapes, arugula, radishes, beets, and other items that come in my CSA box each week). I enjoy cooking and am very particular about cookbooks. I prefer ones where I am likely to use over 50% of the recipes. I believe that I will use nearly 80% of the recipes in this cookbook. This cookbook has wonderful recipes and is organized by the seasons. It contains an index of recipe titles AND an index of ingredients. Most recipes include several variations for the sauce or spices. For example, the roasted vegetable recipe has four variations for seasoning the vegetables. While not a vegetarian cookbook, it is certainly useful to vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike who want to eat more produce and to eat them when they are in season (plentiful and less expensive.) This cookbook is also a boon to people who subscribe to a CSA (community supported agriculture), vegetable gardners, and farmers market frequenters.

    Must have cookbook!

    I gave this cookbook to my daughter several years ago. She has made many wonderful dishes from it. After a particularly tasty carrot casserole, I decided it was time to own the book myself. I love it....

    This is my favorite cookbook!

    I always go to this collection of recipes first as I try to improve my family's diet. It is healthy, well organized, and useful for small or large harvests from the garden. it uses beautiful combinations of whole grains, common and unusual vegetables and fruit all organized by season. The ingredients used are easy to find - not outlandish. It is a wonderful companion to the "More With Less Cookbook" which I wore out and replaced.

    Simple, easy cookbook focusing on fresh seasonal produce

    I bought this cookbook at the Heffer Project gift shop and have loved it ever since. Some of the recipes do need a little tweaking to your personal tastes (like I added tofu to the stuffed acorn squash and more garlic), but, overall, it's a great book. I love, love, love the pear custard bars and ate 4 the first night I made them. It's also led me to expand my fall and winter produce palette to include more seasonal vegetables. Plus most of the recipes are healthy, or at least healthier.

    My New Favorite Cookbook

    This is my new favorite cookbook with its focus on fresh, local, in-season produce and healthy yet simple recipes. It is divided into four sections, one for each season, with the chapters highlighting fruits and vegetables readily available during those months. This is not a vegetarian cookbook but the recipes feature produce as the main ingredient rather than meat.

    I made the Zucchini Garden Chowder (p. 95) from the summer chapter which turned out to be one of the best soups I've tasted with the fresh vegetables and a cheesy base. I'll definitely make it again. This recipe doesn't include meat, but since it uses chicken broth I think adding some cooked chicken could make it more of a hearty main dish, especially in winter. Other recipes I look forward to trying include Crustless Zucchini Tomato Quiche, Mexican Stuffed Peppers, Greek Salad with Grilled Chicken, Baked Squash and Apples, Butternut Bisque, and Sausage Asparagus Skillet.

    Each section includes recipes for breads, salads and vegetable side dishes, main dishes desserts, dips and dressings, and the summer section includes some canning recipes. Another nice feature is at the end of each section there are menu suggestions as well as a list of tips such as try one new food each week, take part in a community garden, eat mindfully and savor your food, and become a fan of less-than-perfect fruits and vegetables that are just as nutritious and tasty. I liked that the authors encourage the reader to consider a sustainable, more-with-less approach to food without lecturing.

    I really do like this cookbook and I can tell it will get regular use in my home. The only thing missing is photos of the recipes but the spiral bound format that lays open while in use makes up for that.

    I would not recommend this cook book

    You would think that a compilation recipe book would give you a better odds of cooking something delicious. I have made 2 recipes from this book, and neither of them were delicious. They were both missing that certain something that made us want to eat the food (we actually had to force ourselves to eat it so we didnt waste food). I'm going to give this book one more try before I try to sell it.

    I've made several dishes from Jamie Oliver and every single one has been scrumptious and with several depths of flavor.

    eating with the seasons

    i have the first edition, so when i found out there was another being published with more recipes i just had to have it. recipes are delicous
    and easy to make and easy on the wallet. great way to get more veggies
    into the family. the Sausage and Greens Soup is delicious, it's one way i have actually gotten my family to eat dandilion greens (springtime) and we've made this in the winter using kale. the Baked Oatmeal made in the evening is quickly heated in microwave for breakfast. the book is laid
    out by season and there is a chart in the beginning of the book for fruits and veggies which very helpful for grocery shopping showing when the best time to purchase food at it's most nutient dense plus shopping seasonally is also dollar smart.

    Best book ever!

    I have used this book every day since I bought it a year ago. I bought a CSA from my local farmers' market and this cookbook gave me recipe ideas I would have never thought of. They are simple and easy to follow, yet delicious! I was able to use all my fruit and vegetables from the Farmers' Market in a week's time.
