I gave this cookbook to my daughter several years ago. She has made many wonderful dishes from it. After a particularly tasty carrot casserole, I decided it was time to own the book myself. I love it....

I always go to this collection of recipes first as I try to improve my family's diet. It is healthy, well organized, and useful for small or large harvests from the garden. it uses beautiful combinations of whole grains, common and unusual vegetables and fruit all organized by season. The ingredients used are easy to find - not outlandish. It is a wonderful companion to the "More With Less Cookbook" which I wore out and replaced.

I bought this cookbook at the Heffer Project gift shop and have loved it ever since. Some of the recipes do need a little tweaking to your personal tastes (like I added tofu to the stuffed acorn squash and more garlic), but, overall, it's a great book. I love, love, love the pear custard bars and ate 4 the first night I made them. It's also led me to expand my fall and winter produce palette to include more seasonal vegetables. Plus most of the recipes are healthy, or at least healthier.

This is my new favorite cookbook with its focus on fresh, local, in-season produce and healthy yet simple recipes. It is divided into four sections, one for each season, with the chapters highlighting fruits and vegetables readily available during those months. This is not a vegetarian cookbook but the recipes feature produce as the main ingredient rather than meat. I made the Zucchini Garden Chowder (p. 95) from the summer chapter which turned out to be one of the best soups I've tasted with the fresh vegetables and a cheesy base. I'll definitely make it again. This recipe doesn't include meat, but since it uses chicken broth I think adding some cooked chicken could make it more of a hearty main dish, especially in winter. Other recipes I look forward to trying include Crustless Zucchini Tomato Quiche, Mexican Stuffed Peppers, Greek Salad with Grilled Chicken, Baked Squash and Apples, Butternut Bisque, and Sausage Asparagus Skillet. Each section includes recipes for breads, salads and vegetable side dishes, main dishes desserts, dips and dressings, and the summer section includes some canning recipes. Another nice feature is at the end of each section there are menu suggestions as well as a list of tips such as try one new food each week, take part in a community garden, eat mindfully and savor your food, and become a fan of less-than-perfect fruits and vegetables that are just as nutritious and tasty. I liked that the authors encourage the reader to consider a sustainable, more-with-less approach to food without lecturing. I really do like this cookbook and I can tell it will get regular use in my home. The only thing missing is photos of the recipes but the spiral bound format that lays open while in use makes up for that.

You would think that a compilation recipe book would give you a better odds of cooking something delicious. I have made 2 recipes from this book, and neither of them were delicious. They were both missing that certain something that made us want to eat the food (we actually had to force ourselves to eat it so we didnt waste food). I'm going to give this book one more try before I try to sell it. I've made several dishes from Jamie Oliver and every single one has been scrumptious and with several depths of flavor.

i have the first edition, so when i found out there was another being published with more recipes i just had to have it. recipes are delicous and easy to make and easy on the wallet. great way to get more veggies into the family. the Sausage and Greens Soup is delicious, it's one way i have actually gotten my family to eat dandilion greens (springtime) and we've made this in the winter using kale. the Baked Oatmeal made in the evening is quickly heated in microwave for breakfast. the book is laid out by season and there is a chart in the beginning of the book for fruits and veggies which very helpful for grocery shopping showing when the best time to purchase food at it's most nutient dense plus shopping seasonally is also dollar smart.
