The book shows how surgical techniques can be simulated on a computer video display using simple two-dimensional and three-dimensional frame models, and more complex 3-D full colour video simulations of a patient's condition and disease. It also demonstrates how a complete operative procedure may be simulated on the computer screen, selecting and 'excising' tissue just as in the actual operation, and how visual and tactile replicas of cases are created so that the problems and solutions can be explored. A team of international experts extend the book's scope beyond plastic and reconstructive surgery to orthopaedic surgery, neurosurgery and general surgery, and there is also coverage of the possible impact of biorobotics and the future of 'fuzzy logic' in automated system control.
