Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Williams ( Greek Myths for Young Children ; Don Quixote ) once again dips playfully into the mythical past, here recreating--with wit and kid-pleasing visuals--the travels and travails of the entertainingly eccentric Sinbad. Her signature comic-strip-style art, busy and brilliantly hued, follows this errant sailor on seven danger-filled voyages. Sinbad's first-person narrative (addressed to a porter who is also named Sinbad) describes such exploits as landing his ship on a whale he mistakes for an island; entering ``a valley studded with diamonds and crawling with deadly snakes''; encountering a giant with lion-like claws who consumes most of Sinbad's crew; and being shipwrecked after a sea monster swallows his ship. The intrepid voyager survives it all, managing repeatedly to regain his lost wealth and return home a rich man--and each time (save the last) yearning immediately to return to the sea. Williams's fans will hope that she soon makes a return trip--to her drawing board, and another legendary locale. Ages 7-up. (Mar.)
Children's Literature - Judy Katsh
The voyages of Sinbad the Sailor are presented in cartoon style in this large format book. Captions are used to illustrate and tell Sinbad's story of his seven voyages-each one more amazing than the previous. Dialog bubbles reveal the up-close and personal versions of the events as they befall Sinbad, his friends, and his foes. It may be confusing to read both stories at the same time, but it is definitely worth the effort. Sinbad's stories are tall tales, and the simultaneous retelling from various perspectives just doubles the fun.
School Library Journal
Gr 2-5-A modern, sarcastic retelling of the seven voyages of Sinbad, illustrated in dazzling detail and sparkling watercolor cartoons. A bare-bones, captioned story line, told with derisive humor in dialogue balloons, interacts with the narrative. The artwork is stunning, but the dialogue is distasteful and destroys the spirit of this classic tale. Stick with ``Sinbad the Sailor'' in James Riordan's Tales from the Arabian Nights (Checkerboard, 1985).-Barbara Peklo Abrahams, Oneida City Schools, Manlius, NY
