Like a stack of vinyl left out in the midday sun, the hallucinogenic U.S. debut from the Avalanches spills over in a babble of anonymous notes and voices, exquisitely warped and stuck together like spun sugar. Recalling the dense montages perfected by the Beastie Boys and DJ Shadow back in the wild days before sample clearance fees, Since I Left You is 58 minutes of pure junk shop gold. Perhaps the B-list stars favored by the Australian group were an effort to save money -- the Osmonds, Nancy Wilson, and the Mamas & the Papas are probably not besieged with sample requests -- but more likely, it's that their collective pop dross makes the most impressive mountain of candy-coated hooks and beseeching vocals. Like a Phil Spector wall-of-sound production collapsing in upon itself, vintage '60s and '70s arrangements spill over disco beats and bits of dialogue, then dissolve into backward tape hypnotics and stereo-panning static. But don't get it twisted -- Since I Left You is far from casual. Much of its power derives from the meticulous cutting and pasting, most feverishly displayed on the jaw-dropping (if atypical) single "Frontier Psychiatrist," a hilarious assemblage of Wild West motifs, Freudian analysis, and cinematic thunder. It's an arch tour de force on an album whose pleasures are relatively straightforward -- unlike the Beasties circa Paul's Boutique and their ilk, the Avalanches don't revel in the obscurity of their sonic resources. "Radio" samples Madonna's "Holiday," after all. Content to amass the biggest pile of found sounds, the Avalanches radiate a big-hearted swirl of goodwill that suggests nothing short of Joyce's Ulysses with a drum machine. Just say "Yesss!!!"

This is the best album I have heard in years. The art of sampling is nothing new to electronic music but the Avalanches have a sound that is truly unique and innovative.
The quintessential party etched in tin. Like the Beastie Boy's and the Beach Boy's idiot savant stepson emerging out of a back alley encounter on the corner of Breezy Street and Main. Lazy keyboards and frantic beats effortlessly pull together a mix of samples as wide and unstable as a hippo on a Schwinn drunk on peppermint schnapps. Step away from the barbeque, the Avalanche's got the lighter fluid and are now in control of your burgers; you better like 'em rare because you won't see an album like this in a while. So roll the dough, pound the pita, and slather on the hummus because it's time to go buy this album.
Let me just start by telling you that I loved this album. I am an older man and usually I don't care for what the kids are listening to, but this is the exception. You'll want to strap on a pair of Depends, because, if you're anything like me, you'll soil your shorts when you hear it.
This is by far the best trip-hop/dance album I've ever heard. Every sound blends together to create a Love Boat/70's atmosphere and all tracks are unskippable. "Since I Left You" is a masterpiece in sound which shows a presence camparing to Fugees' "The Score", The Beatles' "White Album" and The Beastie Boys' "Paul's Boutique". Show support to trip-hop and buy this classic. By the way, I have TWO copies. It's THAT GOOD.
