If you remember the hilarious parodies that Jo Stafford and Paul Weston collaborated on, you'll welcome a CD reissue of these tracks. But beware ... this is a parody of music in general and, in particular, of the late Mitch Miller's long list of "sing along" albums and TV shows. Anyone can sing off-key or play the piano poorly, but only Jo Stafford and Paul Weston could elevate it to an art form. Seriously, it takes real talent to come across as though you are trying to sing/play "in the worst way" and actually manage to do so! It would be great if the earlier Jonathan and Darlene collections (especially the Paris album and the Piano Artistry set) also get a good CD reissue treatment.
Jo Stafford was one of the 20th century's greatest talents, as a big band vocalist and a soloist ... she had so many hit records, well-produced and performed albums, and about the classiest TV series ever. She retired long ago, and many young adults have not had the privilege of hearing her sing. Her husband, Paul Weston, was a suprememly talented arranger and conductor (does anyone remember his New Orleans tribute, the "Crescent City" LP?). In their comic personas, Jonathan and Darlene Edwards made musical mayhem. I suspect they are the only ones who could make this kind of "slapstick" approach work ... and just look at the luminaries in that list of sidemen!
