Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: John C. Byrn, MD (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics)
Description: This foundational book addresses the early experience with the most minimal of approaches to colorectal surgery. A little over half of the book is dedicated to single incision approaches to benign and malignant colorectal diseases and the remainder provides an excellent summary of the latest advances in the more well-described transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEMS) techniques.
Purpose: The aim is to provide an introductory book on the techniques of single incision colorectal surgery and TEMS. The authors meet these worthy objectives with ease in this concise, easy-to-read, and well-illustrated book.
Audience: The authors target residents, fellows, and practicing general and colorectal surgeons with well-designed chapters describing the breadth of techniques. The foundations of the most routine procedures are presented in detail along the tips of the trade which will elevate the performance of even seasoned minimally invasive surgeons. The authors are undisputed leaders in this field and they have assembled a group of excellent contributors.
Features: The majority of the book is devoted to single incision colectomy. The technique is covered from the introductory procedure of right hemicolectomy to the most advanced procedures performed in restorative proctocolectomy and total mesorectal excision. Excellent illustrations provide remarkable practical advice and chapters on the literature supporting the techniques will mark this as the foundational textbook in this area. The remainder of the book addresses TEMS and hybrid NOTES procedures following the same excellent pathway, walking readers through the introductory and advanced procedures and the evidence to support them.
Assessment: This is an excellent book with concise, easy-to-read chapters covering the breadth of minimally invasive approaches to the surgical treatment of the diseases of the colon and rectum. It is a must have for practicing colorectal and general surgeons who is interested in minimally invasive surgery and will very likely prove itself to be a foundational textbook for these techniques.
