Sir Francis Drakeby John Sugden
John Sugden has marshalled the mass of drake evidence now available and presents the most comprehensive biography of the daring corsair to appear this century. Embracing the man and his times, the author explores neglected areas of the life to separate the facts from the folklore in his rise from poverty to power. Sugden offers new information about familiar tales of piracy, feats of navigation and battles at sea, while examining the man himself and the reasons behind his successes and failures as a commander. For the first time the full dimensions of Drake's activities are charted, and he emerges as a complex man of fascinating contradictions. In his own day his exploits were considered so remarkable that his contemporaries attributed to him supernatural powers. As biography and history, this is a rich and thrilling chronicle, revealing an intrepid seaman and warrior of surprising humanity as well as a dazzling self-made businessman, parliamentarian, and social climber--a man courageous and aggressive, boastful, affable, and loyal, who became accustomed to privilege despite a humble childhood lived only a step ahead of want.
